To minimize the disruptions to your mining and settings you may want to also disable Windows Updates.  If you feel more secure leaving them on, you can do so and just understand there are very frequent updates that sometimes reboot your system without you’re involvement and therefore stop your mining.   
As of this writing, the network is already over 450,000 blocks, so geth is going to take a long time to download those blocks. Your only indication that blocks are being added to the network is if it says “importing 256 blocks” (or something to that effect). If you run geth and don’t see that after a few minutes (or a few seconds?) you’re likely not connecting correctly.

Something miners started to notice was as the DAG increased in size AMD Radeon 400/500 series cards took a performance hit, whereas the GeForce 10 series and older AMD Radeon 200/300 series cards didn’t. So this may be bad news for those that snapped up Radeon RX 470/480 and Radeon RX 570/580 graphics cards. ASIC vs GPU debate. This debate has been going on since about 2013. While the debate is usually focused on the future of the blockchain, definition of “distributed computing”(many small players, or few large players) and how to best avoid 51% attack, I will focus on long term profit from a miner’s perspective.
Hashes per watt is absolutely not the metric you want to judge a card’s merit on. Case and point: you pick an RX 560 and the ilk as the ultimate card, even at a pittance of hashes per card. Usually, the increased coins earned from the extra hashpower outstrips the extra power usage significantly (up until you hit that steep portion of the performance exponential curve). If you’re scaling anywhere past a few cards or a single rig, 75W vs 100W on a card isn’t your primary concern.

If you’re running a lot of GPUs (4+), additional tweaks might be necessary to ensure that they’re all recognized by the OS. This is another excellent budget alternative to the Radeon R9 295X2. It is the second highest in terms of the hash rate among the GPUs for mining Ethereum, of course, coming after the Radeon R9 295X2. The Radeon HD 7990 comes with a hash rate of 36 MH per second, which draws 375 watts of electric power from the wall. Each of these GPUs is estimated to net in a return of $469.40 in one year. Its initial investment, however, is much lower than the R9 295X2. Available at Amazon, this GPU is one of the best cost-conscious alternatives for those who want to mine Ethereum. With 56% as its profit ratio per day, this Ethereum mining GPU has a payback period that slightly exceeds one year. It has a daily cost that is estimated at $1.08, which is evidently lower than the R9 295X2’s. That brings its daily return to $1.29, while the cost per MH/s is $18.89.
ETH-only mode when ASM algorithm is used (enabled by default): change “-dcri” option value with “+/-” keys in runtime to find best speeds. If you get best speed at “-dcri 1” (i.e. you cannot find speed peak), use “-asm 2” option to enable alternative ASM kernel (available for Tonga and Polaris cards only).
