I was wondering if you could help me understand the relationship between the Ethereum client (e.g. geth, parity) and the Ethereum mining client (e.g. ethminer). My naive guess is that they communicate somehow over JSON-RPC, and the former manages the whole blockchain whereas the mining client just provides it with work to do. But I’m not sure I understand what the value of ethminer is, and why there are two separate elements in the mining stack. How would you explain it? – William Apr 28 ’16 at 17:35
With mining rigs, you want the lowest clocked CPU, bare minimum RAM, 5,6 or 7 GPUs and a very basic HD.   Oh, and as you can see from the picture, you don’t want nor can you fit all those GPUs instead of a normal case.  You can use a nice custom made case as you see above or something cheap like a milk crate.
Good article but only half written. It does a great job explaining the key inputs into the analysis of profitability but it did not actually follow through with any such analysis! It just says at the end “yes it’s profitable but switch to monero after PoS” with no basis to justify the claims of profitability.
Something I’ve done when building out a GPU mining farm, is to do the OS/DRIVERS/MINING setup and then just clone the solid state drive using a 2 bay hard drive dock with offline clone feature built in.
All this computing power chews up electricity, and that costs money. It’s worth looking at your hardware’s energy consumption in watts, when making your choice. You want to make sure that you don’t end up spending all of your money on electricity to mine coins that won’t be worth what you paid.

I can see some people put money and never reinvest in more hashpower .. and they expect to have a return in investment .. really dude ? you know that BTC difficulty raises almost every week … so if you stay at your same hashpower .. you will start losing money … the best way is to reinvest everyday for 6 months ( hashpower ) … and then start withdrawing your money after 6 months .. and you will thank me for it anyway .. i have just invested $2700 for 18 TH/s ( Bitcoin ) will add more details… Read more »
I bought Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB for 300€ few months ago and now it has made me ~1000€ money in cryptocurrency ! My computer is just a basic computer only the graphics card is good ^^ And I play a lot and turn off the mining while I play, so it’s not mining 24/7. Easy money! 😉
What do you want to optimise for? Lowest upfront cost per unit hashrate? Lowest ongoing cost (upfront + electricity)? Best hashrate per unit electricity? Lowest heat (and electricity) per unit hashrate?
A slightly more expensive miner would differ in its PSU and GPU, but otherwise should look identical. Instead of using an RX 460, it might use an RX 470 (or even 480). Unfortunately, the prices of higher end cards has gone through the roof. I wouldn’t advise anything beefier than a 460 — just enough to get your feet wet mining crypto without costing a fortune in build costs and power.
Oh wow… Is there any way you can take multiple screenshots while walking forward or upload a video somewhere of what’s going on? Kind of hard to pinpoint what might be causing that from just a few screens. Are there any correct shadows? Or are they all messed up? Are you running Windows?

  1. i think you have a multiple gpu on a single card needs correct driver, did you have a previously cards installed on the machine they will disable auto if they aren’t installed anymore, this is what the AMD pro said to me when it happened to me,, We are currently getting reports of stability issues with some R9 380 GPUs, apologies for any inconvenience caused.
    With the Ethereum price over $300 today and the Ethereum Classic price at $20, the opportunity to mine Ether is now extremely profitable! Even as Ethereum prepares to go to a Proof of Stake model at the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018 which will greatly reduce the possibility of making a profit mining, any mining rig built to mine Ethereum could easily be switched to start mining ETC or another coin after the switch with a huge potential to profit before!
    I don’t think that Tom’s is going to advance mining much; our longtime enthusiast members mostly won’t get into it and it’s widely enough known already. A little extra knowledge for those of us on the sidelines and, who knows, maybe miners will concentrate on the most efficient cards and the price of the rest will go down. Not an issue for me, I’m running a fanless GT430, so what do I care about current prices?
