I’m wondering if you can help me troubleshoot something with Claymore Miner, though. It randomly crashes on me without any error messages (even when I add pause to the end of the start.bat to check). Is this because of some instability in my hardware? I haven’t overclocked anything and this is a fairly recent installation of Windows 10. It could be that the graphics card (GTX 1070) itself was factory overclocked and I might need to underclock it.
If you assume all initial purchases of HW are in the past therefore sunk costs and don’t want to factor those into the picture when determining if you investment was profitable yes you could naively look at this as “ETH is profitable to mine in 2018!” However what you’re really answering is “Is it still wise to continue mining ETH in 2018”

I go back to page (4) and logically proceed with the next set of instructions I scroll down and it lists the optifine mod file as 1.11.2 I think great this is supposed to be for 1.12 as initially listed. I download the OptiFine_1.11.2_HD_U_B8.jar and put it in my mods folder. incidentally the link for the download takes me to another page.

This step will depend on where you get your case (or if you decide to build it yourself), so simply follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Anyway, as of Claymore v8.0, you can choose between mining Ethereum alone, Ethereum & Decred, Ethereum & Siacoin, Ethereum & Lbry. Based on something said by an old-time Bitcoiner in a video (I’m no expert on altcoins), I’d say Decred is the best choice. Interesting read. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have the luxury of hanging to test products (for free, especially)… then again I don’t have anything to test, beyond what I grab for my own use. You can also buy used and new graphics cards from Amazon they are trust worthy. You were asking about the Mining bandwidth – you don’t have to worry it either as for 6 GPU mining it would consume very fewer data as far im concerned 3GB per month is enough.

Then again that is not always the top concern. One consideration is if you run a miner in a cold climate, then heat effiency can become the dominating factor. The reason being there is 0 cost to run a miner in a cold climate as it simply replaces the energy you put into a heater and it is as effective as a heater at heating your house. So as long as the amount of heat you produce is not in excess of what you need to keep your house heated, then there are 0$ electrical costs to run it. Once you pass this point then your profit margin diminishes as you will produce more heat than what is needed to heat the house (in other words you will open a window to help cool the house a little). Therefore Hash rate to heat output (equivalent to hash rate to energy consumed) would be more important than the initial price for the hardware.

In choosing the most efficient GPU the most important thing is striking a balance between how powerful you want your rig to be and how much you are willing to spend on the GPU itself and the electricity.
I just finished writing an article on Ethereum mining for this site and I covered the Titan V. It won’t be profitable for Bitcoin mining (only ASIC miners are profitable for Bitcoin) but it will mine Ethereum and other GPU-mineable coins with amazing efficiency. The problem is that it costs $3,000 and so it’ll take a very long time for it earn back its purchase price and become profitable… I believe it will get around 70 MH/s at 200 W mining Ethereum, so if you plug that into a mining calculator it should give you some idea.

  1. What would I do different now? First off, I would make the feet of the rig stand out at the bottom, so it is stackable. Probably it is also a better idea to have the PSUs on the outside of the rig. For mounting the cards, I have better used M3 screws, and the cards should no hang as high as they do now, because I had trouble with the first PCI-e riser on the very left being to short. Also, the conventional HDD is producing a lot of heat, SSDs are so cheap that I would definately go with one of these.
    Another reason why people continue mining even when it’s unprofitable to mine Ethereum is because of their belief that Ethereum will be worth much more in the future.   Even though Ethers are worth around $300-$350 now, in 5 years they might be worth $3000-$3500.  So even if mining now is unprofitable, the coins will rise in value as time goes on.
    Note, when downloading the Claymore Miner Windows may provide a warning, but if you used Claymore’s download link can you ignore this.  He is a well-respected developer who has been building crypto miners for many years.
