The power supply determines how efficiently a computer pulls current from the wall socket. Unfortunately, the standard PSU converts from wall current (Alternating Current, also known as AC) to Direct Current (DC) at around 70 percent efficiency. That means 30 percent of the power pulled from the wall gets turned into waste heat. Fortunately, a variety of PSUs can convert at 80 percent and higher. One more option you can consider is mining Altcoins instead of Bitcions. Today there are hundreds of Altcoins available on the market and some of them are still real easy to mine. The problem is that because there are so many Altcoins it’s hard to tell which ones are worth investing your time in. Some good examples for Altcoins are Litecoin, Dogecoin and Peercoin.
The problem I have seen with the Z170 board (MSI -A Pro) I have is that you have to set pci latency timer manually. I managed to get 5 cards running reliably after playing with that setting (best suggestion is to use >16*number of GPU). Default was 32, and the board struggled with more then 3 cards.
The card also excels at mining, reaching 70 MH/s with stock settings. But it increases up to 82 MH/s when it’s pushed to its limits. In the raw hash power stakes, this card puts Nvidia far ahead in the raw hash-power stakes, and beats out AMD’s closest rival, the Radeon RX Vega 64. It only reaches about 45 MH/s and consumes more power.

However, being a tech enthusiast and a believer in disruptions, I truly believe there’s a bright future for cryptocurrencies. If I’m right, the current rise in Bitcoin and Ethereum is just the start. And one coin might be worth 100x its price today, which might justify mining it today.

After running this miner 24-hours a day for nearly a week, the basement is no longer uncomfortably cold. In fact, when I go down the wooden staircase, the first thing I notice is the extra heat on the back of my ankles. I wouldn’t characterize the basement as hot, but you can tell the rig is increasing the temperature in the room, especially when you stand in front of it. If the system were in my office where I work all day, I would have turned it off after a day. The extra heat that the system produces is only manageable in my large, cool, basement.

Nvidia users may also take note – gap between Nvidia and AMD cards in Litecoin mining is slightly smaller than with Bitcoin, with the GTX 770 capable of up to 240 KHash/s (yes, we’re back to KHash, from MHash) as compared to about 880 KHash/s for the R9 290X. That’s still a significant gap, but it’s better than the BTC situation, where the 680 hit just 130 MHash/s compared to the R9 290X’s 874MHash/s.
its very nice post to see here, lot of good information. i just started to trade btc and altcoin since december 2017, i’ve been thinking about mining some altcoin which maybe profitable for me. i just want to ask how do i mine a coin ? does it required some premium software or is free. also does it process consume both gpu and cpu usage and shorten those ages? i really need to know what i really need and what things to change on my pc if im doing it. its just for killing some time rather than doing nothing.

Bitcoin and Ethereum use different technologies so they work differently thus they will need different hardware resources. However, you might still be able to use the same hardware but it won’t be that efficient if you were to use hardware dedicated to the particular blockchain.
