Exploiting a crucial competitive advantage and motivated by profit and a desire to learn the technology, students around the world are launching cryptocurrency mining operations right from their dorm rooms. In a typical mining operation, electricity consumption accounts for the highest fraction of operational costs, which why the largest bitcoin mines are based in China. But within Mark’s dorm room, MIT foots the bill. That gives him and other student miners the ability to earn higher profit margins than most other individual miners.
No one yet fully understands how cryptocurrencies will change how we transact business with one another, but many experts predict they will spark a revolution. That thinking was reflected in 2017 when bitcoin’s price rose 1,000%, yet still fell short of the top 10 cryptocurrency gainers of the year; when Estonia announced that it would pursue plans to launch a crypto-token, making it the first country to do so; and when major Japanese and South Korean banks began trialing blockchain-based payments (paywall).
Though dorm room mining may seem trivial, it’s creating a new generation of cryptocurrency experts. Many miners say their experiences taught them crucial lessons about the technology, and some have already substantially profited as well.
If you assume all initial purchases of HW are in the past therefore sunk costs and don’t want to factor those into the picture when determining if you investment was profitable yes you could naively look at this as “ETH is profitable to mine in 2018!” However what you’re really answering is “Is it still wise to continue mining ETH in 2018”
The rest of the computer doesn’t matter much. In general, you want a case that can adequately cool either an RX 460 or RX 470 — but GPUs include their own cooling mechanism. The basic idea behind a case is that it shouldn’t impede the GPU’s ability to cool itself. Some people even choose to do open air builds. An extreme few daisy chain together multiple 470 GPUs on Ikea storage shelves!
In Ethereum Mining, the difficulty is adjusted dynamically so that the network produces one block in every 12 seconds on an average. Thanks to the synchronization of the system, it is not possible to rewrite history or maintain a fork except the individual attempting to do so has over half of the mining power in the network.
This card generally retails in the $800 range, but mining demand has driven its price to over $1,000 in some locations. If you’re lucky enough to get free power, then this card could be a great choice.
As much as I despise miners and the very idea of cryptocurrency, I found this article interesting and a little enlightening why people are getting into it late in the game. Even if ETH crashes and burns tomorrow, eventually there will be another to take its place. I don’t see this cycle changing anytime soon either unless governments get involved and start banning mining in their nations.

But what do miners get in return for doing all the heavy lifting?  Ether reward coins.  The catch is that mining tends to require more and more power over time, as more people invest in more powerful hardware.  This is called mining difficulty and increases exponentially with the number of people mining and competing for their Ether reward.
The power supply determines how efficiently a computer pulls current from the wall socket. Unfortunately, the standard PSU converts from wall current (Alternating Current, also known as AC) to Direct Current (DC) at around 70 percent efficiency. That means 30 percent of the power pulled from the wall gets turned into waste heat. Fortunately, a variety of PSUs can convert at 80 percent and higher. When certified by the 80 Plus organization, a power supply unit receive an efficiency rating which varies depending on the load of the unit. The ratings vary between 80+, 80+ Bronze, 80+ Silver, 80+ Gold, 80+ Platinum, and 80+ Titanium. At the highest end of the spectrum, PSUs produce above 90 percent efficiency at all loads, but they tend to cost a fortune.
I’m going to look into this since I already do web hosting in my basement and have a few linux boxes that are not in use. I have a free static IP as well. I just need to see if I have the high quality graphics cards needed. I currently am able to upload a 5mbps and download at 20mbps. Hope that is enough. Thanks!
I have played the original aether this seems to be a quite bit odd terain generation compared to the original. The golden dungeon doesn’t have any golden leaves like they use to. I don’t remember blue or green clouds in the aether one. Did you just screenshot the aether II ?
I haven’t designed a system in a few years but the physics and principles don’t change, just the products. To design a full system, all that is needed after figuring out the insolation hours for your spot is how much energy per day on average you want the system to cover. Since solar can last 25+ years (solar panel warrantees and inverters have 25 year warrantees), i would add aging factors to the equation to get a system that should produce well for 20 years at least (prob not needed for mining though honestly).
So back to the question: Is it worth it to start mining? If you’re just now hearing about Ethereum and interested in maybe jumping on board, that can be a hard question, and it depends on a lot of different factors.

  1. 1x RAM (System Memory) –  4 GB RAM – You don’t need a lot of system memory to mine ethereum effectively. 4GB is about as small as a stick of RAM comes these days, so I recommend just picking up a cheap one as long as it is DDR 4 desktop memory.
