A close second choice for a mining GPU if the Nvidia is hard to find or out of stock, would be the AMD Rx 580 and AMD Rx 570.  The Rx 580 does 29Mh/s and the Rx 570 does 27Mh/s. All mining rig build requirements are the same for either the 1070 or the Rx 580/570. The primary reason I like the GTX 1070 is the lower power usage (100w vs 135w per GPU) when mining. If you want to give your power supply a little extra headroom to run the Rx 580, I’d recommend upgrading to a 1200 watt power supply.

Up to a point, more VRAM will also improve performance. The present difference between a 4- and 8-gig version of the same card can be up to 5 MH/s (To clarify, MH/s stands for megahash per second, and a megahash is a million hash attempts.)
After that comes the testing period, during which you will be updated with the hashrate results, power consumption and pictures/videos of your rig. Also you will be able to connect via TeamViewer to see it in action.
Look at it this way – if the price of ETH is going up and you’re relying on that to make a $ profit then just buy ETH – you’re guaranteed to make a profit with zero overhead for buying hardware. If you are given the hardware or can buy it cheaply (I detail the numbers above) then you can still make a profit, I discussed that scenario above. But so far I haven’t come across a mining contract that wasn’t completely rigged to be less profitable than buying ETH in the first place.

This company is a complete desaster. no ETH payouts so far (started in august). ok, at least the balance grew and I had hope that one day I get the ETH. however, since 8th nov. there has been nothing added to my balance. so mining stopped completely. my recommendation is: don´t be stupid like I was and stay away from this shit. it is a 100% sure loss. no matter how much money you put in there.

I think you also brought up in an earlier convo the point that the current stock has essentially sold out worldwide, so difficulty can’t keep increasing at the current rate. If there’s no new hashing power in the world that people can purchase and put online to hash ETH, then difficulty can’t keep increasing at the current rate. This difficulty “plateau” would be necessary for the 6-8 month, or even a 12 month ROI – and I certainly hope it is the case. Of course if nvidia’s volta comes in May or AMD comes out with midrange vegas or increases the supply of polarises then people will likely soak up all the GPU’s and difficulty will increase until it’s game over and it’s not even profitable vs. electricity.

You do have some great information on mining with the GTX 1070, thank you. But you don’t mention the 1070 Ti, how come? According to other research I have found that the 1070 Ti is actually more efficient, and faster than the 1070 so overall it can cost less and mine more.

Motherboards with on-board graphics (also referred to as integrated graphics) often are either problematic or unusable when more than one GPU card is installed. Choose a motherboard with no on-board graphics.

The ideal GPU when it comes to mining Ethereum is one which offers the highest hash-rate at the lowest power. Currently there are GPUs which provide hash-rates up to 46MH/s at the upper end and at the lower end there are GPUs which offer a hash-rate of about 24MH/s. There are many others which offer a lower hash-rate but they are quite slow and would take a long time to generate Ethereum.
It depends on the difficulty level. I’m not sure where Ethereum is right now, but a megahash rate of around 25 is what most people were getting with IIRC an RX 470 and they were profitably mining a few months ago. A hash rate of 11 MH/s isn’t amazing, but it’s almost half of an RX 470 (which sells for a ridiculous amount of money). You won’t make any money unless Ethereum goes up in value vs your power costs. But using a build like this helps you keep the power cost and build costs lower than had you decided to get a 470 or 480.
For those unfamiliar with how mining works, this is basically the rate at which you will see rewards for the amount of energy your GPU puts into mining the coin. The same amount of energy (or time the GPU is running, in this case) put in a couple months ago would have given the miner far more return in terms of sheer ETH reward than today. But with a price hike, it’s possible that earnings are still high.

  1. I do love solar since it helps to nullify the electricity costs if planned around. My previous job i designed solar systems for homes and businesses thus know how to calculate how much solar is needed to cover any electric usage (i designed my own system on my house).
