Consider that bitcoin mining is akin to thousands of chefs feverishly racing to prepare a new, extremely complicated dish — and only the first one to serve up a perfect version of it ends up getting paid. However, not all boards are created equal. Certain GPU architectures are quicker and more effective than others, and not all cards are loaded with the same type of graphics memory. Naturally, then, we set out to determine for ourselves which models are the most profitable to use for mining, narrowing our focus to some of the most in-demand mainstream solutions from AMD and Nvidia.
I just built a 6 card Rig with Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Windforce OC cards and a MSI Pro Z170A SLI Plus Pro Motherboard. I am getting rock solid stability at 194 Mh/s with GPU temps 57-47-53-53-53-47. My power usage is 850 watts. Runs real cool. I highly recommend the marriage of these parts. Very pleased with the Rigs performance.
With just 1.0 MH/s of hash rate behind the Radeon RX 480, this is also a great choice for anybody shopping for an effective Ethereum mining GPU. Even though its hash rate {24.0 MH/s} is slightly behind that of Radeon RX 480, both of them share the same power cost per day. With $0.4320 as its daily power cost, the cost per MH/s of this GPU is $9.13. This will bring a daily return of $1.15, which can be translated to $418.16 per year. The cost of this GPU is also very friendly, as it’s on sale at Amazon now.
For an Ethereum user who wants to mine Ethereum, the first step is to get the required Ethereum mining hardware. After you have gotten your hardware and all other requirements, you are expected to join a mining pool. Your chosen Ethereum mining pool will help you get a regular payout. Apart from joining a mining pool, you will also need an Ethereum mining software just like you need an Ethereum mining hardware. These requirements are important because without them you cannot partake in the regular Ethereum mining. It is important t know that mining Ethereum could be stressful, time-consuming and a bit expensive this is why some people prefer to go for the Cloud Mining option.
Ethereum mining is best done by joining a mining pool so that there is a steady stream of Ether’s into your wallet and in this guide we will show you a step by step process to do just this. However this isn’t the whole process, as when you mine on your own the chance of finding a block is incredibly small considering the total amount of hashing power in the network – so the best option is to join a mining pool to smooth the volatility of returns – you can read about the benefits of joining a bitcoin or ethereum mining pool here.
You can build a rig that costs $50,000 and will mine cryotocurrency with incredible hashrates, but that machine will likely take 3-4 years just to pay for itself and require you to upgrade the electrical panel in your house to feed it. Additionally, with this being an emerging market there is no guarantee the whole game is even the same game in a year.  With that in mind, if speed is your only concern then you should only look at the highest hashrate cards below.  Power consumption and cost to acquire will not be part of the equation for you.
Some numbers – running ethminer on my CPU gives me a hashrate of 0.248 megahashes per second (MH/s). For comparison, each of my over-clocked AMD R9 390X GPUs gives me a hashrate of about 31.58 MH/s. My GPU gives me 127x the hashrate of my CPU. It is a lowish end CPU AMD FX(tm)-6350 6 core processor and with motherboard + CPU + disk drive + fans consumes about 200 Watts, or 4.8 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day.
It is possible to mine Ethereum, using online services such as AWS, or DigitalOcean. However, no-one has managed to make this real-time profitable, and you should only take this root if you don’t wish to build your own rig and want to speculate on the pricing.
A Radeon R9 HD 7990 will cost you $680. Its power cost per day is lower than the R9 295X2 at $1.08 but its hash rate is significantly lower at 36 MH/s. Its return per day is $1.29 while its cost per MH/s is $18.89, giving it a return per year of $469.40.
We’re specifically mining on an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard powered by an Intel Core i5-7600K quad-core processor and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 2666MHz RAM. It’s more muscle than any miner needs and will surely gobble up a bit more power while mining than is desired. But it’s the simplest of systems we have on hand that’s ready to mine 24/7. CPU horsepower is much less important in a mining rig, so low-power CPUs are preferable at this time.

These cards are quite effective when it comes to power consumption and they are long considered the workhorse of GPU mining. The cards from the RX 400 and 500 series feature a really amazing cooling and can boast a performance that ideally matches the initial price, but the time has sadly arrived when the cards from these series must be put out to pasture – at least for Ethereum mining purposes. Yet, you can use an RX 580/570/480/470 only for mining altcoins, but unless you can find them at a good price, you should shun the rip-off prices that sellers often charge for these cards.
Display Driver Uninstaller. DDU helps create clean uninstalls of display drivers. This can help if you are having issues with the video drivers. In Windows 10 it also disables the automatic display driver updates that can cause compatibility and mining issues.
The GTX 1050TI has a hash rate of 11 Mh/s with a power draw of 70W, it will make a profit of 23.83 USD a month, with a power cost of 4.28 USD per month. It will take just over 6 months pay off the GPU at 150 USD
In the early days of GPU mining, AMD cards were the clear winners, in terms of performance. More recent Nvidia cards (such as the Titan range) match or even exceed the performance of AMD cards. Mining performance for certain coins may be better or worse, depending on the manufacturer.
