Before you go ahead and mine Ethereum, make sure you have a specialized computer hardware that is meant for full time dedicated mining. Different kinds of mining hardware such as GPUs and CPUs are available in the market. Earlier, CPU devices were used for mining Ethereum. But nowadays, you require a mining rig, which is comprised of numerous GPUs. GPUs have a higher hash rate, and can solve equations faster.
Formulas refresh on specific actions. If you are using the formulas method, your data will not update unless you do more common options such as refreshing the entire sheet, or less common options such as downloading a new add-in. This is why I recommend using the GUI so you can have control over refreshing the data
To get started you will need to obtain a mining wallet to collect your digital currency, mining software, and of course your trusty PC equipped with a worthy “miner” or GPU, or better yet multiple GPUs. NiceHash is a simple software package that will get you up and running, but there are a myriad of mining app choices and wallet types out there to choose from, with lots of guides on the net to educate yourself. We’re going to be focusing on the hardware and mining performance side of things in this piece, however.
This guide shows you the basics of solo mining, it should give you a good idea of how everything is connected, if you would like to use a mining pool instead you can try our How to connect to an Ethereum mining pool guide.
There are real figure heads who run Ethereum unlike Bitcoin, which is owned by nobody. Ethereum also features decentralized apps. The Ethereum blockchain is the base, and other people can build decentralized blockchains on top of Ethereum.
Luckily, ETH can be accessed much easier now than before and there’s no more need to download the full Ethereum blockchain (which is the list of mined blocks since Bitcoin mining hardware was created), this will save you loads of time since this blockchain is over 20 GBs by now. So, what you need to get started is to build a proper ETH miner. But what makes a proper miner make the most of a mining pool?
For me, my aim was to find out more about the Ethereum network as I am a software developer and the possibility of programming smart contracts is like playing with a giant box of Lego Mindstorm, with unlimited pieces.
Depending what you do, more VRAM will improve your performance. The present difference between a 4-gig and 8-gig version of the same card can be up to 5 MH/s. MH/s stands for millions of hashes per second, the speed of the hardware solving mathematical algorithms to get Ethereum.
Currently, Ethereum uses the Proof of work (PoW) system- this has been the arm supporting blockchain technologies like bitcoin and Ethereum. Proof-of-work refers to the solving of complex equations, which is a basic requirement for a miner to clear for their block to be added to the blockchain. This system has been picked apart for the environmental damage and electric cost it generates. However, through the use of the Dagger Hashimoto algorithm, Ethereum created a way that permits simple home computers to mine efficiently with little expenditure necessary.
TEchnically 2x 1060 have the same Hashrate as one 1080 GPUs but costs half of the price of 1080/ However, in facing the upcoming increase of DAG size, would not it be more more safe to buy 8 Gb GPUs.models instead? What do you think?
You can easily get started by registering here. Simply select ‘start mining now’ and buy the necessary computing power to mine the currencies. (Use discount code: ZR5W4T when making payments to get 3% off purchases).
If you want a local address, then download the Mist wallet, let the blockchain sync and create your account there. Alternatively, download Geth, and save it to a folder such as C:Ether. Then type “geth account new“. Whichever method you go for, make sure that you save your password with a secure software such as KeePass.
Then all Bitcoin mining is done remotely in the cloud. This enables the owners to not deal with any of the hassles usually encountered when mining bitcoins such as electricity, hosting issues, heat, installation or upkeep trouble.
Now you are connected and mining you should start receiving ethereum to your address. However this depends on what you are mining with – if its your CPU it will be tiny, and if its your graphics card it will be a lot more as Ethash was designed to be mined on GPU’s. You can check out graphics cards here and see how much they mine, their efficiency and profit ratios!
Mining Ether takes up a lot of electricity. On the plus side, though, if mining practices are carried out efficiently more income is generated through sale of Ether. Ethereum mining calculators are available for calculating profits. So, there’s no need to get worked up since you’ll still get a profit at the end.
The next cost is power cost, though this shouldn’t be an issue unless you are using inefficient graphics cards (cards with a low hash rate and high power draw) and living in a country with high power costs. To find out how much you will spending on power each month, you can use this simple website linked below. Here you can input how many watts your computer will be using, and the website will tell you how many kWh that is per month http://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/energy-consumption-calculator.htm
2.2 Click on the download and click install. Your firewall can cause issues but just click allow if it does so – the same is true of windows that doesn’t recognise or approve the software – tell windows its ok when asked. Click through the installation process until Ethminer is installed.
I would like to start mining Ether, but my GPU isn’t the greatest and I don’t really want to spend the money on a dedicated rig. Is mining from my CPU (in a Linux environment) still worth the Ether? Or will I not be able to keep up?
This guide is magnificent, and easy to follow. Are there any good alternatives for storing ether? I’m mining at 26 MHS, and poloniex will not update my balance until i’ve mined 1 ethereum total, that might be a while.
Hi Bhavesh, OK, this seems to be a fairly common error but it’s beyond my capabilities to diagnose precisely from that log. I’ve seen a variety of solutions to this issue proposed on various forums: https://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/18806/couldnt-connect-to-node/23153#23153 https://github.com/ethereum/mist/issues/2426 https://github.com/ethereum/mist/wiki#unable-to-find-peers I suggest starting with the simple solutions first before trying the more advanced stuff. So if using Windows, start things up in Administrator mode. Then try starting Geth manually with the –nat=none flag. Then try starting from the command line as someone suggested. You can also backup your data directory, rename / move it, and let the wallet resync itself… From there,… Read more »
The best mining motherboards will complement your mining setup to ensure that all the vital components to work together well, resulting in a well-oiled mining rig that will help you earn Bitcoin, Ethereum or other cryptocurrencies of your choice fast and effectively – with minimum overhead.
The motherboard is the most important aspect to any mining rig. The reason for this is that it needs to be able to support all of your GPUs. If you only plan on having one or two, then it’s not so important. However, most people will aim to maximize and have 6 GPUs in a single rig. There are very few motherboards that will support the running of 6 GPUs. The big advantage with mining is that you can run the GPUs from x1 PCIe slots, so you don’t need to find a motherboard with 6 x16 PCIe slots.
You say the Vega 64 does 41 MH/s on 135 watts – but 2 – GTX 1060s can do 46 MH/s on 140 watts and costs less…. so not sure about ‘dominating’ the competition. They are definitely a worthy option, especially if you have limited GPU slots on your motherboard.
To join a cloud mining pool, you must purchase shares online. Choose from any one of the plans, pay for the plans you choose and once done start mining. Your provider signs the contract for one year and takes complete responsibility for all the infrastructure, and maintenance tasks. They will provide all hardware and software, pay for licenses, while you focus on mining and collecting your mined coins.
OK, so that sounds like a pretty serious error, the card is halting its mining operation for some reason. It could be overheating or experiencing some other kind of hardware or software error. Can you find the log file? Reading it would probably reveal why the card is giving problems. I believe adding the “-dbg 1” switch will create a log file which will help for troubleshooting.
AMD introduced their new 14 nanometer (nm) RX series card at a hard-to-resist $200 price in 2016 and crypto currency mining became much more profitable as the smaller 14nm fabrication process gives this card impressive performance and low power consumption.
Ethereum has the backing of some boldface names — which could be a benefit or drawback, depending on your opinion of the modern financial industrial complex. It has the potential for intrinsic value like Litecoin or bitcoin but also more obvious commercial applications as well. And, like bitcoin, it has spawned hundreds of other coins that have been built using its underlying blockchain technology.
Hi everyone, now that ethereum price went up mining might be profitable even if you are located in a zone where the kwh is not so cheap. As the existing calculators didn’t have all the features I need, I started to do my own math. Initially using some spreadsheets, gathering data and then putting everything in javascript.
While it is a fact that mining this cryptocurrency is a lucrative affair, its profitability does not come even near some currency platforms such as Litecoin Mining and Dash Mining. If your main idea of mining Ethereum is to acquire the cryptocurrency, then it would be just wise to purchase it. Mining hardware is not that cheap, and it wouldn’t be easy to turn a profit unless you are mining on a large scale.
