Today I got a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290. They’re a beast of a card with 2 8-pin power connectors (won’t boot up with 6-pin), and it’s physically the biggest card I have. With the R9 290, I find I get ~5% better hashrate with Claymore instead of Genoil’s miner (with R9 380s, it’s almost identical). At the stock 1/1.3G clocks, I was getting 28.3Mhs, and OC to 1125 getting 31.8Mhs. Only running for under 1hr at 1125, so can’t say if it is stable yet.

Mining Ethereum at this point requires a 3GB GPU because of the size of the DAG file. DAG stands for Directed Acyclic Graph and is essentially a database of the existing blockchain. In order to mine the next block, your hardware needs to be aware of all the existing blocks. As of this writing, the DAG is just over 2GB, and it only gets bigger with each new step, which happens at least once a week. The vast majority of miners load the entire DAG into VRAM. Without sufficient capacity, the GPU can’t even begin mining operations.
In fact, you’ll be lucky to break even. However, Genesis gets your money, makes an immediate fiat currency profit on the hardware and electricity costs that remain constant over two years. They can take that money and buy ETH with it, or whatever – even putting it in the bank or stock market works – and make quite the bundle. They even get to cream off a few percent on any ETH you earn further increasing their bank – all for free.
This card is an all-round excellent performer, so that mining demand has driven its price from the regular $400 range to over $700, and for me, this is the only real drawback to this card. We like Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1070 for its performance/dollar. However, this implementation costs more and artificially limits the platform’s potential. On the other hand, if you’re able to find the card at a lower price, don’t hesitate to snap it up because it won’t disappoint!
Although, Radeon RX 480 may not compete with earlier versions of Graphic Processing Units of Ethereum mining in terms of hash power ratings, it enjoys excellent popularity due to its impressive economy. Radeon RX 480 offers outstanding power economy to compensate its lower hash power of 25 MH/s. The cost efficiency of Radeon RX 480 is higher than aforementioned GPUs for Ethereum mining and consumes just about 150 Watts. As far as the RAM is concerned Radeon RX 480 is packed with 8GB GDDR5 RAM. Total cost of Radeon RX 480 delivers excellent economy as compared with majority of Graphic Processing Units for Ethereum mining.

The current top gaming graphics card, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, delivers the highest Ethereum hash rate but it also consumes drastically more power under load when mining, versus more midrange cards like the GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 480.     The market? Most people will sell off their gpus or just turn them off.. Are you reffering to the gpu market? 1million gpus.. world wide is a small number and frankly nothing to really be too concerned about..
