I thought I’d see a well-done article, covering the basics, ESPECIALLY hashes per watts in a table… that thing is ESSENTIAL whenever you use the word “efficient” when talking about mining cryptocurrencies!
A slightly more expensive miner would differ in its PSU and GPU, but otherwise should look identical. Instead of using an RX 460, it might use an RX 470 (or even 480). Unfortunately, the prices of higher end cards has gone through the roof. I wouldn’t advise anything beefier than a 460 — just enough to get your feet wet mining crypto without costing a fortune in build costs and power.

Now, let’s do the math for Hashflare ethereum cloud mining contract, with initial $220 investment we could buy exactly 10MH/s mining contract for one year. That’s already 2MH/s less if we would opt to buy GPU card.
This is really overpriced. Buy 4 7990 and get 200 MH/s for around 2600. MB, CPU, HD, PSU, riser cards and built an open air case for around $400. Then if it ever gets to the point mining isn’t profitable sell the cards etc. and save money and make more money than paying $4400 for 100 MH/s…
There are many miners who are doing mining rig using cheap electricity due to geographical advantage like in China, Iceland etc. Using this with an efficient number of GPU’s increases the chances of mining ether faster and more in number. However, as more common people are getting into this network, time to mine per ether has increased vastly and thus, profitability depends on numerous factors.
The Ethereum mining difficulty had been steadily increasing since July but recently dropped from a high of ~3,000T to ~1,500T. This dip was caused by the Byzantine fork but isn’t as advantageous as it seems. Even though the difficulty decreased, the block reward also decreased from 5 ETH to 3 ETH effectively canceling out any benefit from the difficulty change.
The creator of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin, announced last year that the Ethereum network is going to switch from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake framework to confirm transactions. With a proof-of-stake system, holders of Ethereum stake coins by putting them up as collateral to validate transactions.
I trust cryptocurrencies mining is the best investment for the moment. Package of mining contracts I bought at Genesis Mining (Litecoin, DASH and shows return on investment at 8-9 months – and these are 2-year contracts !

If you want a low cost of entry into the world of mining, then the AMD is perfect for you because their cards tend to be cheaper and offer more support and potential for modification. On the other hand, Nvidia Cards have better thermal management and overclocking support within Windows.
Note that buying used cards from crypto miners is not recommended, due to the wear and tear mining places on cards. If you resell your card after it’s no longer useful for mining, you should mention that it was used for mining, then price it accordingly.
The recent drop in Ethereum’s monetary value combined with the vastly increased mining difficulty has severely decreased the profit margin. It’s certainly past the point where anyone buying a new, dedicated mining rig will see a good return on investment (ROI). Even if you spent a relatively meager $1200 on a new setup, you’d need to net at least $100 a month for a year to just break even. Ethereum’s volatile nature and pending shift to a proof-of-stake model makes it unpredictable. Only the most desperate or foolhardy would buy new mining equipment at this point expecting to make a profit. So let’s look for another attack vector.
Power consumption is another major factor. Some GPUs consume as much as 500 Watts of power while there are others which consume as less as 150 Watts. This can be further broken down to power consumption cost per day which stands in at about $1.44 at the highest and $0.43 at the lowest.  
The Ethereum network does not assign a value to gas because the market value of ether fluctuates while the difficulty to mine may not. As such, gas is focused on the mining costs. The price or value of ether is tied to external forces on the other hand.
You can say “Ciprian, could you at least throw in some estimates?” Yes, I could. However, the estimates would be less accurate than Ricky Rubio‘s three-point shots. Modern electronics market is a complete mess. You can buy a product for $ 100, then to see the same product on a different site for $ 50. Nowadays the demand for mining-compliant gear is so high that very often we have manufacturer shortages and high price fluctuations .

  1. Third, select the Graphics card you intend to use for mining. The calculator automatically enters the correct hashrate and power consumption. If your card isn’t listed or you’ve modified its performance, select the Custom option and enter the relevant figures manually. Note that GPU hashrates are entered in (Megahash per second aka MH/s; denoting millions of calculations per second).
