Hopefully we get some plateau, and ETH price goes up to where there is ROI at some point for cards in the $250 range that were online in the 2018 time frame. Then we can all be happy (and blissfully ignore the fact that buying would likely have been better haha – but yes that’s a different topic entirely – profitable in USD is good enough for me for this project!)
Generally, any motherboard with PCIe slots on it is suitable for mining—typically one GPU per PCIe slot. The PCIe slots don’t need to be full-length, as we can attach GPUs 1x slots with the help of risers. With that said, there are potentially some limitations when you start to pack a large number (4+) of GPUs onto one motherboard, even if that board has enough PCIe slots to physically accommodate them. That’s why picking a suitable motherboard is probably your biggest hardware headache if you want to run as many GPUs as possible in your rig.

I’ve got old hardware, but only one GPU with more than a Gig of RAM and I need that for my everyday driver.
Mining profitability is a variable and depends largely on the type of mining software you own, the cost of electricity in your locale, the current price of the cryptocurrency you are mining and, of course, your own overheads.
Have a question in regards to the CPU, since some coins can be mined via CPU, what would be the consequences to have a good CPU and also mine something with it while the GPU´s also do some mining, then i would get some extra mining power? or am i thinking wrong here?
So if you’re looking for a way to pay off some new gaming GPUs, you could technically mine them for a few months to pay them off, but if you’re expecting to become an Ether millionaire, and you don’t have a massive operation already–it’s probably a pipe dream.

So back to the question: Is it worth it to start mining? If you’re just now hearing about Ethereum and interested in maybe jumping on board, that can be a hard question, and it depends on a lot of different factors.
 – You want to get a simple low end CPU and at least 4GB of RAM – Tip: make sure your motherboard, CPU and RAM are compatible (i.e. LGA 1151 motherboards need an 1151 socket CPU, and DDR4 RAM / LGA 1150 motherboards need an 1150 CPU and DDR3 RAM)

The thing is Ethereum is the cryptocurrency which is ASIC resistant; i.e you cannot mine it with any ASIC you will have to mine it with graphics cards. I have also inserted Amazon links as it may help you buy them.

Install your GPU Drivers like you normally would (Next, next, Ok, etc.) and reboot.  Afterward, you know your GPU’s are recognized correctly if you go into Device Manager (search in Windows search bar) and you don’t see any warning marks on your GPU’s and it shows them correctly like this:  
Another risk, though small, is that if you decide to mine on the ETHash algorithm you have to make sure you have enough VRAM (Video Random Access Memory) on the graphics card, as the networks DAG (Directed Acrylic Graph) will be stored on the VRAM. So if you do not have a large enough VRAM size on your GPU you will not be able to mine that coin. At the moment, Ethereum’s DAG file size is 2.1 GB meaning that you will have to mine on a card with more than 2 GBs of VRAM. You can check the DAG size for some popular coins using this website.
Power consumption is another major factor. Some GPUs consume as much as 500 Watts of power while there are others which consume as less as 150 Watts. This can be further broken down to power consumption cost per day which stands in at about $1.44 at the highest and $0.43 at the lowest.  
A recent test of eight of the top gaming graphics cards on the market  done by HotHardware, shows the most effective Ethereum miners currently on the market, both in terms of raw hash rate (MH/s) versus the total system power draw under load.
These cards are quite effective when it comes to power consumption and they are long considered the workhorse of GPU mining. The cards from the RX 400 and 500 series feature a really amazing cooling and can boast a performance that ideally matches the initial price, but the time has sadly arrived when the cards from these series must be put out to pasture – at least for Ethereum mining purposes. Yet, you can use an RX 580/570/480/470 only for mining altcoins, but unless you can find them at a good price, you should shun the rip-off prices that sellers often charge for these cards.
Another option are dedicated mining cards. These cards are made specifically for miners and offer a hash rate and efficiency bump over their gaming orientated counterparts, without the need for you to do much tweaking (overclocking and undervolting). However, most of these cards do not have display connectors making them useless to gamers. This makes the card worthless for resale, so if something happens to the cryptosphere making crypto worthless, say if some global superpower outlaws Bitcoin and other currencies alike making crypto worthless, you won’t be able to get a penny back from these dedicated cards. If you are confident in the success of cryptocurrency however, and are willing to take the risk, these cards are an excellent option.
If you live in a hot region and use air conditioning, you actually consume more than double the listed electricity because the heat being produced in the computer has to be subsequently removed by the air conditioning, which is not 100% efficient. Texas might seem to be attractive for mining because the electricity is cheap, but if you do the full energy calculation you’ll realize it’s only worthwhile in the winter.
It’s hard for me to tell yet – how legit is HashFlare, they seem pretty legit to me, but I haven’t yet withdrawn any  funds from there yet (well, I’ve been with HashFlare cloud mining just for a month and mining BTC)
If the payout continued as existing rates …I easily double my investment.. But is impossible…cos by difficulties rate going up… So far daily payout look promising. Just keep my finger cross….thanks GM…:-)
Troubleshooting tip:  Some miners have had success installing all GPU’s at once and then installing the drivers.  Others prefer to install only one card, install the drivers, shut down the system and then install the rest of the GPU’s and then just let them all be recognized by Windows (you’ll feel the system lagging, some flickers, or brief black screens while each card is detected by Windows).  
The 1080 Ti represents the pinnacle of Nvidia’s graphics card line-up. The price of this card is a way high, but it has a great deal of fast VRAM, so it will ensure that it’ll be able to mine Ethereum for years to come. From the spec sheet, things look very good indeed and if you try to work on it a bit, however, you can raise the hashrate up to 32 Mh/s. This hashrate is great for mining Ethereum. However, the card is even better at mining Zcash.
Raising over $140 million USD, CoinWarz says that the DAO crowdfunding project “is a landmark in the history of the Ethereum protocol,” and they hope to aid miners in taking advantage of the newfound Ether mining profitability. Since the beginning of the crowdfund, the Ether price has risen by more than 60%, presenting a lucrative opportunity for miners.
I’m about to buy (1) R9 280x HIS R9 280X IceQ Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DLDVI-I/HDMI/2xMini DP + (1) 750W PSU. I’m confident that I will be able to ROI, but it seems too risky because nothing else is worth mining with it besides Ethereum.
Note 2: If you were just testing this guide with the free micro instance you have now reached a dead end, in fact you will read this message “modprobe: ERROR: could not insert ‘nvidia’: No such device” The system is telling you that the gpu, an nvidia graphic card, is missing. So, start over the guide and get the g2.8xlarge instance before proceeding any further.

  1. Hi Charles, Sounds like a cool setup, hope you’re having fun with it and making some good money. I think your auto-correct is changing Claymore to Clayton. Anyway, as of Claymore v8.0, you can choose between mining Ethereum alone, Ethereum & Decred, Ethereum & Siacoin, Ethereum & Lbry. Based on something said by an old-time Bitcoiner in a video (I’m no expert on altcoins), I’d say Decred is the best choice. I haven’t heard anything about the other options and don’t know what they do exactly, except for some vague notions about “decentralized storage.” I’m not an expert on Ethereum… Read more »

    What I am writing probably sounds like a project I still have to work on. However, I’ve already got the gear and parts for several rigs. There are some things that should be finished, but I am actually a step away from being ready to accept orders.

Actual results vary depending on your customization. AMD cards allow for greater customization while Nvidia cards are locked to certain configurations.
