Does the mining process use much data bandwidth over an internet connection? If so, this would have to be added to the calculations in regions such as the outskirts of the Metro Detroit area where cable providers have no competition and have begun to implement data caps on cable internet.

This one is easy: buy the cheapest CPU that works with whatever motherboard you pick. When it comes to mining, the GPUs do all the work. Your CPU will essentially sit idle, so there is no reason to waste money on anything other than the bare minimum.
We’re specifically mining on an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard powered by an Intel Core i5-7600K quad-core processor and 16GB of Corsair 2666MHz RAM. It’s more muscle than any miner needs and will surely gobble up a bit more power while mining than is desired. But it’s the simplest of systems we have on hand that’s ready to mine 24/7. CPU horsepower is much less important in a mining rig, so low-power CPUs are preferable at this time.
Start out small. I don’t recommend starting out by buying hundreds of graphics cards and miners, especially if you have no previous experience with mining. If you start out small you can easily upgrade in the future by either adding rigs to your farm, or by adding graphics cards to your rigs.

Taking today into account, it took us three days to install the cables and connect them to the panel. Now the workshop is properly powered up – there are cables everywhere – which means that we will be able to begin connecting the rigs soon!

I haven’t designed a system in a few years but the physics and principles don’t change, just the products. To design a full system, all that is needed after figuring out the insolation hours for your spot is how much energy per day on average you want the system to cover. Since solar can last 25+ years (solar panel warrantees and inverters have 25 year warrantees), i would add aging factors to the equation to get a system that should produce well for 20 years at least (prob not needed for mining though honestly).
Now the ethereum calculator gets the latest network hash rate from etherchain.org and the eth price from etherscan.io. The average blocktime represents the time in which a new block is generated and for each block 5 ETH are generated. Statistically you will be able to estimate how many ethercoins are generated by you given the fact that you know the whole network computing power. It’s your part of the pie. That means for each 17.84 seconds (assuming thats the average time until a new block is generated) you get 5 ETH * 25Mh / 591.2GH. But remember this is an average. The estimation should be quite exact for the near future but if you want to estimate for longer term there is much uncertainty regarding how those variables evolve(Average Block Time, Average Network Hashrate).

The testing phase also allows me to get the best of the rig hashrate-wise. I think you read this wrong. I didn’t write this saying “These are the exact steps and parts list you need.” It’s simply saying, “Here’s a basic idea you can possibly adapt to your own circumstances.” No, not everyone has a 290X in storage. But a lot of people do. My current “leftover” GPU is an R9 280. That’s plenty strong for some hobbyist mining.
Oh trust me, my hope is that people panic sell these miner GPU’s for cheap when they realize theyre only worth $$ to other miners. Id love to pick up the nvidia variants around $50-60 when eth mining continues to go down lol. If I can pickup a large amount of GPU’s at that kind of price, should be able to dominate the alt mining game for some time.
But now, with difficulty going through the roof with everyone mining every card they can get their hands on, and coin prices seemingly dropping 5-10% a day….I think the ship either has sailed or at least is pulling out of the dock. They could gamble and win if coin prices spike again, but I feel bad for people jumping in now since most will be lucky to break even.
However, a high hash rate does not guarantee profits; electricity is still a big factor. The hash rate is often denoted as mega hash per second, a million calculations in a second. Whichever card you decide on, be prepared to spend a lot of shopping time at the various retailers and resellers. Only then can you hope to find that coin at a “fair” price. Mining has really inflated GPU prices across the board, which is a good indicator that GPU mining is still profitable—if you play your cards right.

  1. Certaintly depends on your timeframe. Would I eat the cost of electricity and hardware for a year or two if I knew that holding for that time pays off well? yes. Do I know which coin will be the most profitable to hold and not just cost me money? no. So is it worth it? maybe.
    It’s also never too late to start mining. New cryptocurrencies are created everyday, so in the future, if the top currency’s difficulty is too high, you can always choose a different currency. But if it does come to the point where you can’t mine enough currency to pay back your power bill, you can always sell your rig and make most your money back that way.
