In a blockchain, transactions are added in a block, then the block is closed and added in the chain. After that a new block is open. In order to maintain the consistency over the network, only one miner can close a block in a specified moment. That miner is the one which solves first the hash problem and finds the winning solution. Then it closes the block and signs all transactions, getting the block reward along with all transaction fees.
The recent drop in Ethereum’s monetary value combined with the vastly increased mining difficulty has severely decreased the profit margin. It’s certainly past the point where anyone buying a new, dedicated mining rig will see a good return on investment (ROI). Even if you spent a relatively meager $1200 on a setup, you’d need to net at least $100 a month for a year to just break even. Ethereum’s volatile nature and pending shift to a proof-of-stake model makes it unpredictable. Only the most desperate or foolhardy would buy new mining equipment at this point expecting to make a profit. So let’s look for another attack vector.
I think you also brought up in an earlier convo the point that the current stock has essentially sold out worldwide, so difficulty can’t keep increasing at the current rate. If there’s no new hashing power in the world that people can purchase and put online to hash ETH, then difficulty can’t keep increasing at the current rate. This difficulty “plateau” would be necessary for the 6-8 month, or even a 12 month ROI – and I certainly hope it is the case. Of course if nvidia’s volta comes in May or AMD comes out with midrange vegas or increases the supply of polarises then people will likely soak up all the GPU’s and difficulty will increase until it’s game over and it’s not even profitable vs. electricity.

Hopefully we get some plateau, and ETH price goes up to where there is ROI at some point for cards in the $250 range that were online in the 2018 time frame. I think it’s profitable only if ETH price climbs with ETH difficulty but with that being said, it would be better to just buy ETH if ETH climbs 30-50%. The people who are making the real profit are the people who are supplying the parts :)!

 – A standard keyboard, mouse and monitor are needed.  If managing your rig remotely (not covered here in this beginner guide) you will want to get a headless hdmi dummy plug to plug into your rig so it boots into Windows properly for remote access.  
Now granted at the end of the six months you could turn around and sell your rig to someone else, or just keep mining. But eventually, the yield will be less than your $100 a month power cost unless ETH is going up by more than 50% per month (that could well be – do you feel lucky punk?).
