Believe me – I’ve done this with BTC mining and never made a profit.
Bitcoin cloud mining is another option. Ideally, we would want to diversify by mining bitcoin in addition to ethereum, not to mention adding even more crypto currencies to the mix, and fully reaping the benefits of a broader diversification.
The Radeon R9 295X2 is currently the most popular GPU when it comes to mining Ethereum. It offers a hash-rate of 46 MH/s and is the industry leader when it comes to hashing power. The R9 295X2 consumes a power of 500W. This GPU is in high demand and tends to get sold out as soon as it goes on stock. It comes with an 8GB GDDR5 RAM.
A close second choice for a mining GPU if the Nvidia is hard to find or out of stock, would be the AMD Rx 580 and AMD Rx 570.  The Rx 580 does 29Mh/s and the Rx 570 does 27Mh/s. All mining rig build requirements are the same for either the 1070 or the Rx 580/570. The primary reason I like the GTX 1070 is the lower power usage (100w vs 135w per GPU) when mining. If you want to give your power supply a little extra headroom to run the Rx 580, I’d recommend upgrading to a 1200 watt power supply.

Very good guide and an interesting read. I was wondering, lets say you can only lay hands on 3 gpu’s initially. Is it worth bringing up the rig with half gpu’s and then adding the rest as you can find them?

  1. The ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ is another excellent choice for mining, with support for up to 13 GPUs. However, it currently costs about the same as Asus’s mining board, and for the money I’d rather stick with Asus. If you know that you’ll definitely stick to a single PSU and a small handful of GPUs (e.g.: the majority of us), this is a fine choice, especially if you find a deal on it.
    Now, what about the furniture? We have invited a specialist to discuss what we need in the office – stuff such as a coffee table, a desk for monitors/laptops, some shelves for documents/invoices and a couple more things. Check future pictures to see what furniture we’ve picked ?
    The time-tested wisdom in mining is that it’s probably best to not assume that ETH will stay at any given price in the short term. Theoretically, it could crash at any moment. If ETH had a sudden price crash, people would be dumping their GPUs all over eBay and Craigslist — meaning much lower resale value for your hardware.
