not if ethereum is your only plan and you have to pay full price on cards. i can buy cards as business expense, so no tax for me. i can write them off, so they’re again half in price. i bought some to a decent low price, (gtx 1070 for 400€) so total expenses I need for break even is 180€ per card. this should/could work out. and if not, I can sell the cards off for half the price and still be able to break even (without any cent mined), although I would rather stick to it and mine for the only real reason to mine: support an idea. be it a crypto currency or something like folding at home.

Got my first payout of ~$70CAD(in BTC). I had a bunch of downtime this first week due to tweaking my clocks, drivers, algorithms, etc, so I’m hoping to keep in the $70-80CAD/week range with mining ETH and ZEC for ~2 months. I’ve decided to put invest my weekly payout(+cash to equal $100 total) into whichever currency has hit a low for the day, unless of course BTC is low at the time, in which case I’ll ride it out for a bit. I started with a $70 payout and $30 of my own money, and I’m currently at $120. I know that’s no guarantee of how things will go, but I think playing the currency market is a much better option than dumping more money into cards.
Another way to look at the increasing difficulty is that you could say, well it just means it takes 10x longer to compute the hashes compare to 6 months ago but you still get ETH at the end, it just burns a bit more electricity getting there (well 10x is quite a bit more…) Remember also that at least cloud mining the contract is limited to 2 years – for example if your first 1.5 ETH takes a month to mine, second 1.5 ETH takes 2 months to mine, and your third 1.5 ETH takes 4 months to mine then you’re never going to see anything like 36 ETH at the end of 2 years, you just run out of time.
Look at it this way – if the price of ETH is going up and you’re relying on that to make a $ profit then just buy ETH – you’re guaranteed to make a profit with zero overhead for buying hardware. If you are given the hardware or can buy it cheaply (I detail the numbers above) then you can still make a profit, I discussed that scenario above. But so far I haven’t come across a mining contract that wasn’t completely rigged to be less profitable than buying ETH in the first place.

4GB is fine. Overkill really, at least for Linux. If you have an old 2GB stick (or even 1GB!) sitting around and plan to run Linux, you’re good to go. If you want to run Windows, then 4GB is probably a realistic minimum.

This means that it decreases your mining profit each month depending on how much the site estimates that the network’s difficulty will go up or down. For example, if the difficulty goes up by 100 GH/s in one month, the calculator will then assume that every following month will incur a difficulty increase of the same amount. If in one month the network receives an abnormal  difficulty bump, whether due to a price increase of the currency leading other miners to join the network, or if AMD or NVidia release a new graphics card with a big hash rate boost, the MCB calculator will then use that abnormal value as the absolute value for every month, making the calculator unreliable. Though it is still useful to know that your mining income will decrease every month due to difficulty. This calculator also includes the mining pool fee.

Double click your Bat file to start the miner.  The miner will start, run the setx commands to set those environment variables, initialize each of your GPU’s, build the DAG file on each of your GPU’s and start hashing away.  Let it run for about 20 seconds and then click “s” to have it show your Hashing speed.  You can use that back in the calculator again to determine a more accurate representation of your earnings.
