One important part of mining is monitoring your power usage since it directly affects your profits. We recommend picking up a WeMo Insight outlet to monitor energy cost. You need to sum up the power consumption of your GPU and all the other components and make sure your power supply has the capability to supply more! So if you have two GPU’s that consumes 220 Watts and other components that need 250 Watts then you can get away with a 750 Watt power supply unit as the total power needed is only 690Watts.
You will be disappointed with such a pathetic return you will receive. Plus difficulty will most likely double by the time you are up and running. And with new GPU tech months away from release your current purchase will crater in value. It’s a lose-lose situation for new potential miners. There won’t be anything profitable to mine after ETH.
You need a computer, a GPU, and other accessories depending on the setup. The best GPU integrates a high capability to give you a high hash rate and economy in power consumption. You can also include cables, air conditioning equipment, and a power supply unit (PSU) among your hardware expenses.
Mining a block is difficult because the SHA-256 hash of a block’s header must be lower than or equal to the target in order for the block to be accepted by the network. This problem can be simplified for explanation purposes: The hash of a block must start with a certain number of zeros. The probability of calculating a hash that starts with many zeros is very low, therefore many attempts must be made. In order to generate a new hash each round, a nonce is incremented. I’m not sure where Ethereum is right now, but a megahash rate of around 25 is what most people were getting with IIRC an RX 470 and they were profitably mining a few months ago. A hash rate of 11 MH/s isn’t amazing, but it’s almost half of an RX 470 (which sells for a ridiculous amount of money). You won’t make any money unless Ethereum goes up in value vs your power costs. But using a build like this helps you keep the power cost and build costs lower than had you decided to get a 470 or 480.

  1.  – For Power Supplies, you want to double check that your PSU has enough connections to support the number of GPU’s you are running and enough overall wattage to support your total system power draw (and to give yourself some buffer of at least 10-15%). A helpful site for identifying how many 6 or 8 pin PCI-E power connections your GPU will require is here (Realhardtechx.com) and to get a sense of your overall system power draw, this is a good power consumption calculator (outervision).  Pro Tip: if building multiple rigs stick with the same brand PSU as you can use extra cables on your other systems if needed (e.g. I use only EVGA G2 PSU’s so if I have extra VGA, sata or molex cables from one build I can use them on another build).
    We’re specifically mining on an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard powered by an Intel Core i5-7600K quad-core processor and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 2666MHz RAM. It’s more muscle than any miner needs and will surely gobble up a bit more power while mining than is desired. But it’s the simplest of systems we have on hand that’s ready to mine 24/7. CPU horsepower is much less important in a mining rig, so low-power CPUs are preferable at this time.
    The GTX 1050TI has a hash rate of 11 Mh/s with a power draw of 70W, it will make a profit of 23.83 USD a month, with a power cost of 4.28 USD per month. It will take just over 6 months to pay off the GPU at 150 USD
    Though this guide is mainly focused on the Proof of Work (PoW) side of mining, you should be wary of Proof of Stake (PoS), as Ethereum will be swapping over to this method in the near future. The difference between PoW and PoS is that PoS does not require graphics cards, nor does it require a very powerful system at all. PoS relies on you “staking” your coins to the network; the more coins you stake, the higher chance you get of receiving the transaction fees of other Ether investors. Another benefit of PoS is that the computers are not very expensive, nor do they draw lots of power, making PoS a far greener alternative to PoW. There are also no block rewards in PoS, thereby making the transaction fees the only reward.
