If you want to improve your rig specifically for ethereum mining, you can do it fairly inexpensively. The Radeon RX460 graphics card is an excellent choice, and it is less than $120. It can give you a smooth gaming experience without breaking the bank. Be mindful that because it only has 2GB of DDR5 memory, you may have to upgrade your card later down the line.
It really depends on the currency you mine, how cheap you can find the GPUs for and the cost of electricity in your area. The other overhead costs that you mentioned, such as cables, space etc. may play an important role if you’re building a huge number of mining rigs (e.g. tens or hundreds of GPUs). In which case, you should also add the cost of labor to put together all that equipment.
To get started you will need to obtain a mining wallet to collect your digital currency, mining software, and of course your trusty PC equipped with a worthy “miner” or GPU, or better yet multiple GPUs. NiceHash is a simple software package that will get you up and running, but there are a myriad of mining app choices and wallet types out there to choose from, with lots of guides on the net to educate yourself. We’re going to be focusing on the hardware and mining performance side of things in this piece, however.
When a currency (Ethereum) is resistant to ASIC mining, the average person can afford to buy a GPU if they don’t already have one. This allows everyone to verify the network instead of a select few with lots of power.
Litecoin is closely based on bitcoin — they’re built on the same underlying code — but with a few distinctive tweaks. The central difference is that Litecoin is mined using the Scrypt algorithm, which is rooted in mathematical computations that are simpler than those used by bitcoin’s SHA-256 algorithm. As a result, in contrast to the specialized, super-expensive, energy-intensive mining rigs required to mine bitcoin, you can mine Litecoin with a decent laptop or desktop PC, especially if it’s tricked out with a powerful graphics card.
 – You want to get a simple low end CPU and at least 4GB of RAM – Tip: make sure your motherboard, CPU and RAM are compatible (i.e. LGA 1151 motherboards need an 1151 socket CPU, and DDR4 RAM / LGA 1150 motherboards need an 1150 CPU and DDR3 RAM)
Step 16 Hashing Power benchmark: If you want to get an estimation of your hashing power you can run ethminer -M (for CPU mining) or ethminer -G -M (for GPU mining). The command will run and you should get a result similar to the image bellow.
Enough money to invest in all the things above. Even though ETH mining is fairly accessible, there’s no such thing as free money and to make it profitable you require a proper upgrade for your system; otherwise you might just waste your time
TalkEther is a partially decentralized mining pool. It is very interesting because it mines locally on your hardware and eliminates any latency to the pool. This works out because it locally sets the pool’s account as coinbase. Once a block is mined locally it will immediately be broadcasted by your local client and eventually accepted by the network, without submitting it to the pool first.
Update, 2/5/2018: We have a new article posted detailing CyptoNote (Monero) mining performance with AMD’s Threadripper processor with a CPU-optimized algorithm, alongside a handful of other X86 processors and a powerful GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPU.
Always, always make sure you have a system in place for monitoring your fans and temperature, and you can check on these remotely. If you’re using Genoil, then the system will try and correct itself, and if you’re using ethOS, it will shut down a GPU if there is an overheat issue. However, not all miners are created equal, and if you’re not careful, you could burn your house down. This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to continuously monitor your rig and ensure that it runs stable within the first 24 hours. Also, bare in mind the heat fluctuations during summer and winter months as those few degrees difference can have a huge impact.
Hashrate is the only value you need to input to use this calculator, we do the rest of the work for you! Hashrate is the speed which you are mining, and is normally clearly displayed by your mining software or in the specifications for mining hardware. Make sure that you have the correct hashrate suffix selected. For example, if your miner reports 600 GH/s, ensure that GH/s is selected and not TH/s.
The main part of the mining hardware is the graphics processing unit (GPU). Here is a link to a site that allows you to compare the different GPUs – http://www.mininghwcomparison.com/list/index.php?brand=both . Type “Ethereum” in the filter.
There are also Ethereum Mining Contracts such as by Genesis Mining. These companies provide you with your own dedicated mining rig, and you have to pay for this up front. Again, unless you’re speculating heavily on the pricing, these don’t tend to be worth it.
What is the best ethereum pool? The answer is, not one. All are equally as reliable as then next. The only differences they have is fees they charge. It’s also important to be close to server for better connection and speed.
Our world is becoming more and more digitalized. Our homes can talk to us, we can look inside of our refrigerators to see what we need without ever opening the door. We can control the lights in our house when we are across the state. Needless to say, technology is in every part of our lives, so it should be no surprise that even our currency is becoming digitalized.
As we have seen with other popular cryptocurrencies such as Zcash, ZenCash, Monero, Dash, Litecoin, and Bitcoin, mining profitability is always directly related with these factors (see our guide on Ethereum mining profitability).
Selecting this option will show the Sell Monthly field below, this is where you input what portion of crypto you would like to sell each month. For example, if you plan to sell 25% of your new crypto, enter 25 into the Sell Monthly field. Your profits will equal (money earned from selling) + (unsold crypto * predicted price) – (total expenses + hardware costs)

Ethereum is quite difficult to get mining on windows – although with a bit of help and following the tutorial below you can get it up and running and start your own ethereum mining project in 15 mins. We’re going to show you how to start mining Ethereum on your GPU and CPU with Windows 64 bit in this guide. You will need to download two programs and need to have a decent GPU with more than 1GB of memory to get the most bang for your buck in terms of mining as Ethereum works on a memory hard hashing technique which GPU’s are best at.
What is the best GPU for mining ethereum in 2018? This question comes up a lot in the comments. If you’ve decided to build a rig using my GPU Mining Rig Build Guide this article should clear up any questions you have about the best currently available graphics cards for mining Ethereum.
Cloud Mining is profitable. I do invest into cloud mining for about 1 1/2 years now. Mainly i use Hashflare as my mining income, be sure to check them out. They generate me about $80/day and i’ve only invested $4,500. You won’t have to put in that much tho. Hashflare is giving you a one year contract with any investment you make, that means any money you invest will bring you profits for 1 year. Any money will do fine, here is some example math:
The card also excels at mining, reaching 70 MH/s with stock settings. But it increases up to 82 MH/s when it’s pushed to its limits. In the raw hash power stakes, this card puts Nvidia far ahead in the raw hash-power stakes, and beats out AMD’s closest rival, the Radeon RX Vega 64. It only reaches about 45 MH/s and consumes more power.
2. PPLNS means payment for the last n shares (Pay Per Last N Shares). This is more a variable number based on the luck of the group. Therefore, if the group is lucky and extracts more blocks in a certain period, you will get a higher payment. Of course, if the mining group has bad luck, you will get a smaller profit. If you are running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and do not log out frequently, you will get approximately 4% more ETH using PPLNS compared to PPS for Ethereum extraction.
R9 390(X) can boast a pretty good performance and achieves a hashrate similar to the GTX 1079 Ti and 1080 models. However, the price is far lower than theirs and R9 390(X) also has lower power consumption.
The Ethereum Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) file is stored in the GPU’s VRAM and it increases proportionally to mining difficulty. A new DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) is generated for each epoch around every 30,000 blocks. This DAG must be downloaded in order to continue mining. Note that older cards are still available but their performance will degrade with each new epoch.
Once you start mining, you will also need to keep your Ethereum in a safe location. This is possible in two ways, a local wallet or an online wallet. A local wallet, has better safety as it always remains in your control. However, if you do use a local wallet, then either install it on a computer that’s not your miner or regularly transfer funds elsewhere. The reason for is that should your computer crash; it could be hard to recover any Ether that is kept on there.
With every good there will be some complaints, as customers found that the product was that their card stopped working only after using it for a month. A few people have said that their card created a lot of buzzing, which was quite annoying. People have also mentioned that the fan was defective on their units, causing the card to overheat pretty quickly.
Ethereum is an open blockchain platform similar to Bitcoin but with additional in-built flexibilities. With Ethereum, the blockchain can be considered to be intelligent thanks to the Ethereum Virtual Machine and Smart Contracts. Whereas with Bitcoin it’s a glorified ledger.
Now that your miner is set up, you’re able to sit back and watch as your video cards gain you passive income every month in the form of Ethereum. It is important to consider any variable costs that you may incur during the mining to determine your profitability. Variable costs may be electrical costs, maintenance costs, pool fees, dev fees, exchange fees, etc.
AMD’s cards are more popular with miners and they are likely the best choice for those who are budget-conscious. The fact that AMD’s quarterly sales are over 30% lower than Nvidia’s means that its top line receives a greater benefit from a given amount of mining-related sales. On the other hand, the top-end Nvidia cards outperform AMD cards in terms of power efficiency, and they are quieter and more versatile than AMD cards.
Supply does rise to meet demand over time. However, Ethereum has experienced explosive growth with roughly a $35 billion dollar market cap currently, and this spike in Ethereum’s price has led to a fresh shortage of cards and correspondingly high prices.
As my title says, I am a complete newbie to the Ethereum Project, but not to the cryptography in general. Although this will be the first time I will consider investing in the mining process. And I just would like to know, what is the best current hardware is out there for mining, and where best to find available in stock to ship.

  1. Step 5: You need to tell your Geth program to create a new account. As you have installed it in your user directory in Step 2 then it is just a simple case of typing in “geth account new” and then pressing return/enter. This should look like this “C:\>geth account new”.
