Motherboard — What is the best motherboard for mining Ethereum? There are lots of doable motherboard + CPU combinations that will work for building an Ethereum mining rig, but actually finding one in stock can be a bit of a headache. Some sites sell pre-configured motherboard + CPU products, but if you want to save some money, it might be worth your effort to look around on Amazon and eBay to find a good combination that will work for you.
Need some help with getting my rig to recognize my 5 AMD r390s. Currently have asRocks h81 pro btc, 2x 1000w psu, 4gb RAM, 256gb SSD. All GPUs have power and fans run, but system doesn’t register. Downloaded original bios(as cards were second hand), all drivers are installed. Kinda lost here. All help is greatly appreciated!
I have an old PC that doesn’t have PCIe slots but has 4 USB’s. I wonder what about if I use 4 PCI-E PCI Express X16 Extender and run the GPU’s from the USB ports. would it work? like this, I would need a smaller investment, just to start playing with it.
I’m sure you’ve already heard of the cryptocurrency craze way before reading this post. Cryptocurrencies are slowly and quietly revolutionizing the way financial systems and transactions work (and should work in my opinion).
Your original link to amazon which included the picoPSU with an adapter is no longer available (404 page). Can you provide the optimal power brick adapter (link to product or recommended specifications) for use with the picoPSU 160xt in this build please?
6x USB Riser Cables –  USB Riser Cables – These are to connect the 6 graphics cards to the motherboard and allow spacing between cards for heat dissipation. These are necessary when building a rig with this many GPU’s.
Once you have the CPU actually seated and installed properly on the motherboard, you need to connect the CPU fan to the motherboard. You should see a three-pin connector that is likely labeled something like “CPU fan”. Then, you should use an 2×4-pin cable to connect your CPU to the power supply. Most likely the cable (and the GPU) will be labeled CPU. The port that you want to connect to your power cable is going to liekyl be a 4-pin port located somewhere on the motherboard near the CPU.
Every developer seeking to engage and make use of smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain needs Ether to proceed. It is popularly called the fuel that runs Ethereum. It is a less expensive way of running transactions on the network when compared to buying Ether. You can also decide to sell your Ether after mining.
Ethereum is currently but it is going to switch to Proof of Stake within a few months which will likely eliminate the profitability. Starting with Ethereum and then switching to ETC or another altcoin seems like the current best option!
I slap case fans on them when that happens, and have all my cards gapped. Right now all my cards are running at temps of 40c -60c in the winter. Air gaps make a HUGGGGEEEE difference. and even though risers can be more difficult to use they are worth it. Also, I undervolt all cards, which you should if you haven’t you can easily knock the voltage down 5-10% some cards even more.
Because of all of that my rig will actually pay for itself in less time than your rig will pay for itself. Not saying your rig is bad by any means. Just saying I stand more of a chance of breaking even than you do 🙂
After you have the GPUs connected to the motherboard, you need to mount them to the case. This can be done in a variety of ways, but the most common is to simply place the GPUs on the case and connect them more “permanently” using zip ties. Finally, after you have your GPUs mounted, you should run a cable labeled “VGA” rom the power supply unit to the 6- or 8-pin VGA connector on each GPUs, and you should connect a few SATA power cables to each of the powered risers. I recommended the 6-pin to SATA risers above, and I would further recommend that you only connect at most 2 cards per SATA cable from the GPU.
It is very easy to burn out your GPUs – I’ve done in two, but luckily got warranty replacements. The first just stopped working after one day. And one of the fans got “sticky” in the second one after a few months.
Hashrate: The hashrate is the potential of the processing unit, it determines how many hash can process one unit per second. When choosing a GPU to mine Ether, we should look at this value is high, between 20 and 30 MH / s. Currently the most powerful units on the market are the NVIDIA with Pascal architecture or the AMD with Polaris.

If you assume all initial purchases of HW are in the past therefore sunk costs and don’t want to factor those into the picture when determining if you investment was profitable yes you could naively look at this as “ETH is profitable to mine in 2018!” However what you’re really answering is “Is it still wise to continue mining ETH in 2018”
Hi T. It’s really hard to make any definite claims about the profitability of mining, as it depends on how Bitcoin price and difficulty will move in the medium term… Try out the calculators with various price / difficulty scenarios which you consider likely. It seems China is clamping down on mining so difficulty might drop for a while until other countries can pick up the slack… but that’s just a guess. It seems to me that the S9 will soon be eclipsed by the DragonMint miner, which claims to be 30% more efficient. However, we’re still waiting for the… Read more »
Again, as the post stated, the goal was not purely ROI. It was to build a computer that is generally useful as a GPU cluster for R&D while still being able to pay for itself. Effectively a free (or near free) cluster.
BTC can be easily sold for cash so, indirectly, mining ETH can be a good way to fill up your bank account or earn cash. ETH can also be sold directly on several major exchanges, such as Bitfinex, BTC-e, Kraken, Gemini and Coinbase.
So back to the question: Is it worth it to start mining? If you’re just now hearing about Ethereum and interested in maybe jumping on board, that can be a hard question, and it depends on a lot of different factors.
but i wont recommend to invest a little amount because the mining contracts are limited and when you invest little amount to see whether the website is paying or not and after gaining trust with that website you will decide to invest a big amount and it is possible that, at that time all contracts have been sold out and then you will not be able to buy…
How do you calculate the power supply needed? Well if your 1 GPU consumes about 150W than 6 GPU’s will make up to 900W but there are other components that will be attached to the PSU. You might even attach a monitor or a screen to view your hashing power.
