A close second choice for a mining GPU if the Nvidia is hard to find or out of stock, would be the AMD Rx 580 and AMD Rx 570.  The Rx 580 does 29Mh/s and the Rx 570 does 27Mh/s. All mining rig build requirements are the same for either the 1070 or the Rx 580/570. The primary reason I like the GTX 1070 is the lower power usage (100w vs 135w per GPU) when mining. If you want to give your power supply a little extra headroom to run the Rx 580, I’d recommend upgrading to a 1200 watt power supply.
Yes in the sense that if difficulty gets too high, the number of Ether coins you get in reward doesn’t offset the cost of electricity and/or cooling.  But usually, when that happens, people tend to stop mining or move to another coin.  Once that happens, difficulty drops down and Ethereum becomes profitable again to mine.

Is Ethereum mining profitable? This is one of the most asked questions about ethereum mining. The response is not so simple and clear because not all the parameters can be anticipated. Profitability depends on the hashrate and on the price of hardware and electricity but also on Eth price and on the how many other people are mining in the network. We had to exclude certain boards because they were too slow (previous-gen GeForce GTX 9-series, for example) or came up short on memory capacity (GeForce GTX 1050 2GB and Radeon RX 460 2GB). Linux might be able to better handle massive mining rigs with many GPUs, but for 1-2 (or possibly more) cards, you’ll probably see very little difference in mining rate, so what your comfortable with plays a larger role.
This is another great graphics card for mining, although it pulls more power than the 1050Ti and has a steeper starting price, it pays off with its large hash rate bump. This card also has an external power connector, so you will not be able to plug this into any old desktop computer. However, this card is an excellent performer on the ETHash algorithm, as well as EquiHash. Keep in mind that if you choose the 3GB variant you should know that in the future, you will not be able to mine some on the ETHash algorithm due to how the algorithm functions; where the DAG file is stored in the GPUs VRAM. If you want the absolute highest hashrates you can currently get, then the NVIDIA Titan V is the master at a whopping 82 MH/s in Ethereum mining! Of course this card costs a whopping $3000 each.  Six Titan V GPUs in a miner would get you a 492 MH/s rate while setting you back a cool $18,000 USD.  And with a power demand of 250 watts you’ll be mining for 17 months before you break even. But then you don’t care about profit right?

Therefore, to enhance their odds, small miners should band together via mining pools that combine their computational ability to hash blocks. With combined computing ability, mining pools will solve a block more rapidly and distribute the reward to the miners in the pool according to the amount of work incurred in providing a solution. Over time, the individual miners within the pool will realize the benefits, especially when ether prices keep rising.
There are currently about 2.5 million GPUs mining Ethereum. The rating for efficiency can be determined by dividing the hashrate by the power draw. This is a primary indicator, which shows how profitable your mining operations will be in the future (after the payback period), given that electricity is a fixed, ongoing cost. The more efficient your card (newer cards are usually more efficient), the more profitable it will be once you’ve received the ROI.
