Because of the way Ethereum hashes work, miners need to have systems with graphics cards with specialized graphics processing units (GPUs) and a lot of memory. Experts are recommending graphics cards with at least 3GB of RAM to get started today. Those high-powered graphics cards can be expensive, and the popularity of Ethereum mining has led to a shortage in the supply.

Alejandro Regojo told Bitcoin Magazine , referring to the current state of Bitcoin mining. “With this fork, we want to show how Bitcoin can be as ‘Satoshi’ as possible, as social as possible, and as decentralized as possible.”
Ich bin der Ansicht, dass man nur mit PoW ein wirklich dezentrales System erreichen kann, allerdings mit Algorithmen, die so weit wie möglich ASIC resistent sind und möglichst vieler Hardware ermöglichen am System teilzunehmen, wie z.B. Cuckoo Cycle (welcher auch weitgehend Poolresistent ist). Das war eigentlich auch die Idee von Bitcoin, dass jeder Nutzer (Node) nebenher mit seinem PC mined. Aber ich bin gespannt auf die weitere Entwicklung von Ethereum, denn wenn es funktioniert und (unendlich) skaliert, wie es sich Vitalik vorstellt, ist er wahrlich ein Genie.
Das Mining von Kryptowährungen ist kein Selbstläufer. Diesen Eindruck kann man bekommen, wenn man die zahlreichen Anleitungen und Empfehlungen im Internet sieht. Derzeit macht es keinen Sinn sich extra für das Mining die Hardware anzuschaffen. Die Bedingungen sind in Deutschland aufgrund des hohen Strompreises alles andere als einfach. Bevor das System für mehrere Tage angeworfen wird, sollte der Taschenrechner bemüht werden.
The program might say that you have insufficient memory on your Graphics card to mine Ether, with Ethereum’s Ethash algorithm. If this is the case, you can still mine with your CPU, or go out and buy a new graphics card! If you get an error message like this, tap Ctrl+c, to cancel the process. Then you can either retry it, or alternatively, move onto step 16, and mine with your CPU, rather than your GPU.
At this point, we’re done with the essentials. If you’ve done everything correctly, you should be able to reboot and watch your rig automatically start mining shortly after the Windows desktop loads. There are a couple more steps that may be important to you, though.
Double click your Bat file to start the miner.  The miner will start, run the setx commands to set those environment variables, initialize each of your GPU’s, build the DAG file on each of your GPU’s and start hashing away.  Let it run for about 20 seconds and then click “s” to have it show your Hashing speed.  You can use that back in the calculator again to determine a more accurate representation of your earnings.   
When you’re satisfied that you’ve found the sweet spot for both clock speeds, it’s time to lower voltages. This is pretty straightforward: drop values 25 mV at a time until you experience instability, then bump it back up to last stable value. You should be able to reduce your power consumption a fair bit this way without impacting performance at all (these are great if you want to measure your electricity usage at the wall).
Download the OpenCL SDK for your GPU platform. I have AMD GPUs. The SDK I downloaded was the AMD APP SDK v2.9.1. I’m not sure what to download for NVidia cards, but you’ll likely get what you need by googling “download NVidia OpenCL SDK”.
This video card is the older brother to the RX 580. For some cryptocurrencies, the AMD RX 480 actually outperforms the RX 580, but I put it at number 3 on the list since it is discontinued and somewhat difficult to find other than on the used market. My favorite model, of course, is the AMD Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ (Model #11260-20-20G). If you can find these at a decent price point (again, always worth checking eBay), they are a great value.
When choosing the CPU, you only need the bare minimum. I wouldn’t recommend getting the absolute cheapest, but one or two points above. The reason for this, is that some extra processing power is useful when setting up and makes reboots slightly quicker. I chose to go with the Intel Celeron G1840.
To start mining with your GPU, key in ‘ethminer –G’ followed by the enter key. This will initiate the mining process after building the DAG ((Directed Acyclic Graph), which is a large file stored in the RAM of your GPU for the purpose of making it ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) resistant. Ensure that there is sufficient space on your hard drive before getting to this point.
As more miners join the Ethereum network, the harder it becomes to solve the problem, which leads to an increase in the mining difficulty. This is why it’s currently costly to mine Ethereum. The returns are low and equipment is still pretty expensive. However, as Ethereum price continues to rise, it could become worthwhile in the future.
Because of the GPUs, we’ll need several PCIe 2.0 x16 slots on the motherboard, and then cables known as “risers” to connect the GPUs to the slots. With these cables, we can also keep away the hot GPUs from the rest of the system. However, casual motherboards don’t have such a number of PCI-E slots, so a particular type of motherboard is required to run the rig. It uses PCIe 2.0 x1 slots instead of PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. Some motherboards have several PCIe 2.0 x1 slots, each for a riser and thus for a GPU. They’re said “BTC-ready“.  The brand ASRock has well-played its game, making bestsellers such as the ASRock H81 Pro BTC, which can be associated with a cheap Intel Celeron G1840 (< 50W TDP). Create a tradeable digital token that can be used as a currency, a representation of an asset, a virtual share, a proof of membership or anything at all. These tokens use a standard coin API so your contract will be automatically compatible with any wallet, other contract or exchange also using this standard. If NVidia and AMD released their high-end cards 1080Ti, Vega 65, etc. with 3.5GB of RAM and a lower price to reflect less gRAM. These wouldn't be of interest to miners while still being of use to gamers. Do you think gamers would buy them? With so many changes coming to Ethereum in the future, it is expected that interest in this altcoin will only continue to increase. Whether or not that means there is a future for ASIC mining hardware focused on Ethereum is a different matter altogether. Bitmain has not officially confirmed this product will come to market, and common sense says they will never do so. Then again, Ethereum’s switch to proof-of-stake may still be years away, for all we know. An Ethereum ASIC miner is an interesting idea, but for now, it’s nothing more than an illusion.
