There’s been a massive influx of newbies due to media hype and I hope they either die out or get smart. This isn’t a get rich quick scheme, it’s a meatgrinder and money pit for people who don’t understand crypto well enough. People who basically started learning this year about Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc have no idea how badly they can screw themselves here.

I assume cards with 8+6pin would draw 150W+75W from the pcie cables so the powered riser may have less stress? But that would mean the riser needs its own power input cable which can be scarce depending on the PSU setup.
As more miners join, the rate of block creation increases. As the rate of block generation increases, the difficulty rises to compensate, which has a balancing of effect due to reducing the rate of block-creation. The reason this is so important is GPU’s are selling out at insane prices now because the masses are seeing that you get way more revenue than cost of electricity. One can simply a setup at home and start mining Ethereum by using GPUs. You can use the ASIC resistant Ethereum algorithm for mining Ethereum with dedicated processors. Since Ethereum hardware constitutes the most important mining component, it needs to be addressed with due diligence.

If using Standard GPU system with around 50-57 MH/s hash rate, then it could take a few months (around 6 months) to mine a single ether, however, using standard CPU it’s not even possible to mine one ether. Mining calculators can be used to do the reverse calculation as to how much ether is to be mined and accordingly how many GPU’s are required.
Oh trust me, my hope is that people panic sell these miner GPU’s for cheap when they realize theyre only worth $$ to other miners. Id love to pick up the nvidia variants around $50-60 when eth mining continues to go down lol. If I can pickup a large amount of GPU’s at that kind of price, should be able to dominate the alt mining game for some time.
When you execute a transaction or contract in the Ethereum network, you use gas. A calculation that requires more hashes or computing capability will need more gas. While gas is not a token, it is usually measured and paid out as a fraction of ether. Gas is important because it assigns a value to transactions within the network. It prevents miners from performing computations that have no value to the system and makes it costly for scammers to attack. 
Great article, wish you would take it a step further and play with tuning the system to see how significant of a change you might be able to dial in. Also, In regards to heat, maybe it makes sense not to mine during the summer cooling months, but run it 7-9 months out of the year were the heat it produced would not be wasted completely? I understand it’s not the most efficient way to heat a house, but, at least your not doubling down on your costs?
For example, if this were Jan 2016 and we were mining ETH, and spent $3000 for a rig and supplies that produced us (for academic purposes) 30 ETH through the end of the year. That $8.22 price on 12/31 means our mining got us $246. Not profitable; go back and look at the historical posts saying as much when people asked if mining was “worth it” and everyone said to not even try it. Those same 30 ETH are worth $7560 today (assumes not selling at the peak, not mining beyond 30 ETH). All of a sudden, it was retroactively “worth it” to mine, and those naysayers were wrong. All that happened was hodling.

The hash rate in the Ethereum network has been rising over the past few years.You would expect blocks to be mined faster with this rise but they are not because the network automatically adjusts difficulty so that a new block is mined at the constant time of 12 seconds. I haven’t designed a system in a few years but the physics and principles don’t change, just the products. To design a full system, all that is needed after figuring out the insolation hours for your spot is how much energy per day on average you want the system to cover. Since solar can last 25+ years (solar panel warrantees and inverters have 25 year warrantees), i would add aging factors to the equation to get a system that should produce well for 20 years at least (prob not needed for mining though honestly).

The RX 480 and 580s are extremely popular mining cards due to the fact that their price is very low, especially when compared to the similarly performing GTX 1070. Another benefit of this card is that AMD allows users to flash their card’s BIOS, which can make the card run at at higher hash rates with lower power draws. However, due to the popularity of this card, it can be very hard to find at reasonable prices, but if you can find this card at a good price it’s an excellent performer for mining. A: As long as your system meets the general requirements and has at least one GPU with at least 3GB of RAM, you can mine Ethereum.  Some Gaming laptops do have high end cards, but with the considerable heat generated from mining there could be other impacts to your laptop so it’s best to go with a desktop build.  Virtualized environments that you can rent usually do not have enough powerful dedicated GPU in them, or are simply not profitable if they do.  There are currently no ASICs for Ethereum (as it is designed to be an “ASIC Resistant” Proof Of Work hashing algorithim, so if you see ads for one – RUN.  ASIC’s are still profitable for mining some coins (Bitcoin, Dash and Litecoin), but for home built Mining Rigs, Ethereum and other altcoins are still profitable to mine (whereas Bitcoin is not profitable on a home pc – even with many powerful GPU’s do the Bitcoin ASIC technology available).
