There is a fourth possibility; which is that I missed the AMD driver update which fixed the speed problems for RX cards. I will do some more research and update the article. Thanks for pointing out the error though.
A slightly more expensive miner would differ in its PSU and GPU, but otherwise should look identical. Instead of using an RX 460, it might use an RX 470 (or even 480). Unfortunately, the prices of higher end cards has gone through the roof. I wouldn’t advise anything beefier than a 460 — just enough to get your feet wet mining crypto without costing a fortune in build costs and power.
The device is marginally different as it offers a slightly slower hash-rate of 24 MH/s. It comes out into the markets with a 4GB Graphic Card RAM. The daily power cost of this GPU stands in at $0.4320, with the cost per MH/s at $9.13.
Thank you for your dedicated support and becoming part of the resistance! Our coalition is growing and expanding to include different environmental organization… and other federal employees. The calculator uses the latest average network hashrate and usd prices as the defaults. It will also provide an estimate of how long (in days) it will take you to mine a block statistically. Let me know if you any further suggestions or ideas
Unless you build rigs out of totally second-hand parts, which will take more time to procure and get running reliably, you are not going to build 1 GH for “a couple grand”. A reasonable rig, using say the new rx480, which is great bang for the buck, lower power consumption, etc., you should be thinking $1600-$1800 per rig, minimum, and 6 rigs – call it $10k. That’s going to pull at least 50amps of power at the wall, 6 KWh 24×7, comparable heat output, etc. The $10k above, doesn’t include the fans, blowers, etc. you’ll need to keep the HW from burning up.
If you have any views on how to make this clearer and make sure no-one else gets ripped off by unscrupulous providers – please let us know in the comments section below – and lets clean up this industry for the benefit of everyone!
Hi T. It’s really hard to make any definite claims about the profitability of mining, as it depends on how Bitcoin price and difficulty will move in the medium term… Try out the calculators with various price / difficulty scenarios which you consider likely. It seems China is clamping down on mining so difficulty might drop for a while until other countries can pick up the slack… but that’s just a guess. It seems to me that the S9 will soon be eclipsed by the DragonMint miner, which claims to be 30% more efficient. However, we’re still waiting for the… Read more »
You can determine the rating for efficiency by dividing the hashrate by the power consumption. Newer cards are usually more efficient. This rating is of prime importance—given that electricity is a fixed, ongoing cost. In other words, the more efficient your card, the more profitable it will be once you’ve received the ROI.
Jumping into this scene, therefore, isn’t something I recommend just for a lark, and I definitely don’t recommend investing thousands in building huge server farms to try and cash in on Litecoin. Yes, if you mined hundreds of Bitcoins between 2011 and the present day, you might have just settled your retirement – but the chances of predicting an essentially unpredictable market are too high. Don’t risk money you can’t afford to lose.
It offers a hash-rate of 36 MH/s. The R9 HD 7990 consumes a power of 300W at max load which is one of its benefits when compared to the R9 295X2. The power cost per day of this GPU is $1.03, cost per MH/s is $18.9. The Radeon R9 HD 7990 comes out into the markets with a 6GB GDDR5 RAM.
