Having been in the mining game for a bit under 3 years now, I can promise you the “fastest” rig is not always the best mining rig. If there is one thing I can pass on it’s that the volatility with value over long periods is what affects ROI more than anything, and the safest bet is to get ROI as soon as possible so that if/when the value drops, you don’t end up underwater chasing your ROI incessantly. If the value drops significantly, but you’ve made ROI, then you can still mine at a small loss and speculate or simply shut down the rig during non profitable times–if the rig has paid itself off, you have these options, whereas when ROI is still on the table, you are very much limited.
After a bit of digging, the culprit is likely the method of which my RX 580 GPU is connecting to my MacBook Pro. The eGPU enclosure that houses the RX 580 is connected via Thunderbolt 3 and as fast as that port is, the bandwidth is restricted to 1/4 the full x16 speed of a PCIe slot. So even if I had all 4 of my Thunderbolt 3 ports connected to eGPU enabled RX 580s, I still would not get the performance of a single RX 580 connected via a PCIe slot on a PC.
Then again that is not always the top concern. One consideration is if you run a miner in a cold climate, then heat effiency can become the factor. The reason being there is 0 cost to run a miner in a cold climate as it simply replaces the energy you put into a heater and it is as effective as a heater at heating your house. So as long as the amount of heat you produce is not in excess of what you need to keep your house heated, then there are 0$ electrical costs to run it. Once you pass this point then your profit margin diminishes as you will produce more heat than what is needed to heat the house (in other words you will open a window to help cool the house a little). Therefore Hash rate to heat output (equivalent to hash rate to energy consumed) would be more important than the initial price for the hardware.
Learn how to build an Ethereum mining rig using the step-by-step guide below. Mining Ethereum is an incredibly profitable use of off-the-shelf PC hardware. Currently, I’m mining roughly $500/mo of Ether using this exact rig.
There is not a direct relationship between GPU temperature and heat output (it also depends on the cooling solution). There is a direct relationship between power draw and heat output (they’re equal). R9 390(X) are going to heat up your room significantly more than a 480.
Bonus Sleeper: Library Credits (LBC). This one is easy, they are launching their product in June, which sounds awesome (decentralized youtube) and is dirt cheap due to its recent pullback. A must accumulate ahead of its launch.
A: 99.9% of Cloud Mining sites are Ponzi schemes or fractional reserve Ponzi’s.  Even though there are a few that have been around a long time, there have been no 3rd party audits of the hashing power sold and profits are usually very low unless you are promoting heavily and getting others to join in (another red flag of ponzi related activity).  Short Answer – Our advice is DO NOT buy into Ethereum Cloud Mining sites or related Deposit Investment/HYIP programs.
You’re attributing much too broad a brush to people. There are plenty of reasons to keep around leftover computer parts, other than sentimentality. You might want a backup incase your new hardware gets damages, is a lemon, etc. You might hang on to some stuff because you’ve got friends or family that might want it when they finally decide to ditch their current dinosaurs.
It depends on the power and the hash rate of your miner. There are certain factors that you should make sure are right, which will eventually lead to better mining and will benefit you in the long run. If you want to know how much you can make mining Etherum, read the following article.
