Ethereum is a distributed platform which is built on blockchain technology. Blockchain is a sort of a database which is stored on volunteers computers who are running a node on their computer. The blockchain can work if most the nodes in the network are acting fair keeping track and validating all the changes/transactions in the netowork. In order to make sure no group of nodes controls more than 50% of the netowork, the solution is to make it so expensive to control 50% the network that no organisation is able to do it. The algorithm adopted by many coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, ZCash and others is called proof of work and in consists in a searching for a solution that can be found only through brute force. When a miner finds the solution it gets a reward and it can close the current block. The operation for looking for the solution is called mining and all the miners are competing for it, each of them having a chance equal to the processing power he has. Statistically each of them will get a part of the pie proportionally to the computing power is uses.

We’re specifically mining on an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard powered by an Intel Core i5-7600K quad-core processor and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 2666MHz RAM. It’s more muscle than any miner needs and will surely gobble up a bit more power while mining than is desired. But it’s the simplest of systems we have on hand that’s ready to mine 24/7. CPU horsepower is much less important in a mining rig, so low-power CPUs are preferable at this time.

A: As long as your system meets the general requirements and has at least one GPU with at least 3GB of RAM, you can mine Ethereum.  Some Gaming laptops do have high end cards, but with the considerable heat generated from mining there could be other impacts to your laptop so it’s best to go with a desktop build.  Virtualized environments that you can rent usually do not have enough powerful dedicated GPU in them, or are simply not profitable if they do.  There are currently no ASICs for Ethereum (as it is designed to be an “ASIC Resistant” Proof Of Work hashing algorithim, so if you see ads for one – RUN.  ASIC’s are still profitable for mining some coins (Bitcoin, Dash and Litecoin), but for home built Mining Rigs, Ethereum and other altcoins are still profitable to mine (whereas Bitcoin is not profitable on a home pc – even with many powerful GPU’s do the Bitcoin ASIC technology available).
Ethereum is about to switch from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake scheme called Casper. Some of the included incentives for this transition are higher scalability, improved protocol economics, environmental friendliness, and easier implementation of sharding protocols. It is currently not yet decided when Ethereum is switching to PoS, but it’s reasonable to expect that it will occur in late 2018. If Ethereum switches to proof of stake, I’m not sure what role miners will have, but it’s possible that Ethereum mining will no longer be possible after that, unless a hybrid Proof of Work/Proof of Stake model is implemented.
Case – You don’t want your components sitting on top of each other because it could be a fire hazard. You do have the option of leaving the entire system out in the open air or building a case that will allow for plenty of breathing room in between your components. Very pleased with the Rigs performance.
