One thing you did not mention however, is you could theoretically mine at break even, and if the Eth value explodes, discover your profit at that juncture. I guess that would make you more a speculator than a miner though?

ZCash (ZEC) is roughly as profitable as ETH right now. Although when ETH moves to PoS, I expect a lot of the ETH miners to move across to ZEC and send the difficulty rocketing due to the much higher network hashrate.
Wow. You represent about 1/3 of the current network hash power at the moment then? (I know most people probably aren’t actively mining, but still you would have been up there even at peak). Where, roughly, are you based?

2) Graphics Card – Pick your GPUs! Some graphics cards cost a fortune but don’t hash much whilst some are more reasonable but use more power. Ultimately its a balance between how powerful you want your rig to be and how much you want to spend – but a word to the wise – make sure you pick an efficient GPU. You can buy second hand GPU’s from reputable providers such as GPU Shack – be careful though when you buy them off a street corner as often they have problems that you won’t see until you get the card home and plugged in.
Impossible to predict. That depends on the development of the price, which is very volatile. Regarding the current development, ROI when spending the amount mentioned above will probably take place after about 3 months (when you’re NOT paying for electricity).
Hi Charles, Sounds like a cool setup, hope you’re having fun with it and making some good money. I think your auto-correct is changing Claymore to Clayton. Anyway, as of Claymore v8.0, you can choose between mining Ethereum alone, Ethereum & Decred, Ethereum & Siacoin, Ethereum & Lbry. Based on something said by an old-time Bitcoiner in a video (I’m no expert on altcoins), I’d say Decred is the best choice. For those unfamiliar with how mining works, this is basically the rate at which you will see rewards for the amount of energy your GPU puts into mining the coin. The same amount of energy (or time the GPU is running, in this case) put in a couple months ago would have given the miner far more return in terms of sheer ETH reward than today. But with a price hike, it’s possible that earnings are still high.
 – You want to get a simple low end CPU and at least 4GB of RAM – Tip: make sure your motherboard, CPU and RAM are compatible (i.e. LGA 1151 motherboards need an 1151 socket CPU, and DDR4 RAM / LGA 1150 motherboards need an 1150 CPU and DDR3 RAM)
To expand on why 3 months ago vs today is different. Obviously this depends on your cards, clocks, etc but to give you an idea (my cards are some 480 and some 1070 getting around $2 each per day after power cost)… Today you’re looking at something around $2 usd/day per card. 2-3 Months ago we went as high as like $8 usd/day per card. It’s dropped since, raised a bit, dropped again, etc and it will continue to do so. But I wouldn’t bet on seeing above $3/day for extended periods of time anymore.
What the advertisements for cloud mining always leave out is that difficulty always increases (and yes, its very predictable, the trend line is solid). It looks great after the first month, but the coins mined decrease at about a 1-2% compounded daily. That means after a month you are probably making half the coins daily. You don’t notice when coin price is going up, but do you think coins can maintain a 2% avg growth every day forever? At 6 months, you are making 2% the coins of what you were making at the start. Basically, its like this, you lend your friend $100, he pays you back for 100 days $0.39 in gold. Which means he only gives you back $39, but he tells you don’t worry, if gold appreciates you will get your money back. The revenue you get is only from the appreciation of the coin, the actual mining loses money always. So, why not just buy the coin direct then???
Depending on which equipment you choose, you will need to run software to make use of it. Typically when using GPUs and FPGAs, you will need a host computer running two things: the standard bitcoin client, and the mining software.
I assume your gaming rig is Windows based? If so, Claymore runs on Windows as well. Setup is basically the same, and you’ve already go the drivers. Just grab Claymore and execute it from the command prompt.

My philosophy on mining cryptocurrencies hasn’t changed since I first heard about Bitcoin in 2011. If you want to make a bit of a play at earning a little scratch, go for it. Definitely go for it if you already own the hardware. If you think mining some coins could help defray the costs of buying a new GPU that you’re going to use anyway, then that’s probably a reasonable bet.

This model of will provide you a return per year of $586.43.
Pool fees – In order to mine you’ll need to join a mining pool. A mining pool is a group of miners that join together in order to mine more effectively. The platform that brings them together is called a mining pool and it deducts some sort of a fee in order to maintain its operations. Once the pool manages to mine Bitcoins the profits are divided between the pool members depending on how much work each miner has done (i.e. their miner’s hash rate).
