Listed below are the components along with the amount you will need to assemble your GPU mining rig. Ether is an absolute essential, as it serves as fuel for the smooth running of the Ethereum platform. An interesting way to look at Ether is an incentive used to motivate developers to create top notch applications.
ethOS is possibly the simplest way of setting up a mining rig and is my go-to option when creating a new one. While it does cost $39, the amount of time it saves on troubleshooting is more than worth it. Arguably, it’s also easier and more streamlined to monitor as you can access it simply through SSH or look at your custom dashboard. You may have to ensure you have the correct virtual memory enabled (minimum 16GB). To do this, search for system in the start menu. Open system and on the left hand side click ‘Advanced System Settings.’ Go under the advanced tab, under performance settings, and advanced again. Then click ‘Change’ under virtual memory. Uncheck the box that states to ‘Automatically manage paging file size for all drives’ and then input a custom size of 16384 (or whatever is the maximum allowable value) into the Initial and Maximum size fields. This will prevent you from having any errors with virtual memory.
The Radeon R9 295X2 has by far the highest hash rate (46.0 MH/s) of the Ethereum GPUs on the market and will cost you $600. It has a power cost per day of about $1.44, a return per day of about $1.61 and a cost per MH/s of $13.04. This gives a return per year of $586.43.
The Etherum project was born in 2015, and while for some it may have seemed like just another drop in the ocean of cryptocurrencies, it was clearly a lot more than that. To monitor your rig, you have two options. You can either log in through SSH or look at the generated stats panel. The stats panel has the advantage that it’s a simple web page and you can easily view it from anywhere. SSH poses the advantage, that should you have any issues, you can easily remotely manage the system (as long as you’re happy with Linux command line operations).
Although the merit of these approaches can be debated, ultimately these figures are not as important as the ones that detail what is required to make an ASIC work. If an ASIC requires highly stable power supply, then the power supply circuitry on a board may be more expensive than for another ASIC. If the ASIC has a complex communications protocol, additional relatively expensive components may be required. If an ASIC’s die is large, fewer (rectangular slices) can be obtained from a (circular) wafer, defects affect its design dispropotionately, and cooling solutions are generally more complex compared to smaller die chips which in turn have other overhead. Chips with a BGA design are less simple to integrate than a QFN, requiring more expensive (inspection and testing) equipment.
A: As long as your system meets the general requirements and has at least one GPU with at least 3GB of RAM, you can mine Ethereum.  Some Gaming laptops do have high end cards, but with the considerable heat generated from mining there could be other impacts to your laptop so it’s best to go with a desktop build.  Virtualized environments that you can rent usually do not have enough powerful dedicated GPU in them, or are simply not profitable if they do.  There are currently no ASICs for Ethereum (as it is designed to be an “ASIC Resistant” Proof Of Work hashing algorithim, so if you see ads for one – RUN.  ASIC’s are still profitable for mining some coins (Bitcoin, Dash and Litecoin), but for home built Mining Rigs, Ethereum and other altcoins are still profitable to mine (whereas Bitcoin is not profitable on a home pc – even with many powerful GPU’s do the Bitcoin ASIC technology available).
Some mining enthusiast swear that Linux is the best operating system for mining. While this did use to be the case, there are stronger disagreements on the topic then previously. While I do prefer Windows, Linux does have it’s advantages and being a slimmer system it can have its upsides. Furthermore, Windows usually comes with a price tag, so if you’re looking for a free option, then Linux is the one for you.
Bitmain Technologies’ BM1382 calculates 63 hashes per clock cycle (Hz), while their more efficient BM1384 calculates 55 hashes per clock cycle. Similarly, while these hashes per clock cycle are spot-on for the claims regarding the number of cores, BitFury’s BF756C55 is claimed to have 756 cores, but yields around 11.6 hashes per clock cycle. This is because the reference to cores sometimes mean different things, and certain designs result in less straightforward calculation[1]
If you are looking for a solid Ethereum mining hardware, then the Titan cards are something you should look into. GeForce Titan Xp impressed many miners. The large amounts of VRAM are supplemented by an excellent hash rate without too much expenditure of power. Same as RX Vega 64, its top-end AMD rival, this card can be overclocked up to 42 Mh/s, but it will consume 300 W when pushed that hard. On the other hand, the RX Vega 64 achieves a very similar performance but for about half the price.
It can be remembered that around April of 2017, the cards for AMD Rx 4 & 5 series sold out leading to a significant rise in price in most markets. Most miners opted to use this GPU, which was affordably available on the market back then.
Dwarfpool was once the biggest ethereum mining pool, but its hash rate has since dropped to approximately 4.3%. Just like the first and second pools above, they also ask for 1% as the block fee on your rewards.

C: which is a fairly small SSD drive just for my OS (the blockchain is too big to fit on here) and an E: drive which stores everything else. It really depends on the currency you mine, how cheap you can find the GPUs for and the cost of electricity in your area. The other overhead costs that you mentioned, such as cables, space etc. may play an important role if you’re building a huge number of mining rigs (e.g. tens or hundreds of GPUs). In which case, you should also add the cost of labor to put together all that equipment.
After you’ve done all that, you will want to calculate the cost of your electricity. Look at the card and see how many watts of power they require and how much money you will be spending to pay. To do that, convert the watts to kilowatts and then multiply them together. So, for example, if you’re using a GPU that uses 150W and it costs $0.10 per KW/h. You will do 0.15 x 0.1 = $0.015 per hour to run the rig, which equates to $0.36 per day.
Do understand the hardware and electricity costs, time and effort involved in this process. It is an investment that might not be worth once Proof-of-Stake is implemented in Ethereum that does not require mining.

Nanopool – Next on our list is Nanopool (https://nanopool.org). Nanopool currently has 40 000 Ethereum miners and accounts for 15% of the hashrate. Nanopool uses the PPLNS method to calculate payments the same as Ethermine. Payments are made several times during the day and Nanopool has servers in Asia, Europe and America.
