Ursprünglich wurde die Difficulty Bomb am 7. September 2015 eingeführt. Der Plan war, wie Stephen Tual damals auf dem Blog der Ethereum Foundation erklärte, dass die Difficulty ab Block 200.000 – noch im September 2015 – beginnen sollte, exponentiell zu steigen. “Etwa in einem Jahr,” schreibt Tual zu diesem Zeitpunkt, “wird das Netzwerk noch für etwa 3-4 Monate benutzbar sein, aber danach in eine ‘Eiszeit’ eintreten: Die Schwierigkeit wird schlichterdings zu hoch sein, als dass jemand einen Block findet. Dies wird uns erlauben, PoS einzuführen.”
OK so this sounds like a problem with your graphics card driver. Are you using the latest driver for your card? If you’re using a standard Windows driver, this could be the cause of your problem. So I suggest you check out the relevant Nvidia or AMD website and get the latest GPU drivers for your machine.
Your key file(s) are stored in the %APPDATA%\Ethereum directory. For a fresh Windows 10 install, that means the C:\Users\[YOUR WINDOWS USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Ethereum\keystore folder (note that the AppData folder is hidden by default). Copy the entire keystore folder someplace safe to backup your wallet.
Note : all this rethoric is ok for “memory-hard” algorithms, like Equihash (Zcash) and Ethash (formerly Dagger-Hashimoto, Ethereum). It means that mining efficiency is limited by the memory, and the latter being a costly thing, it’s said to undermine profitability in mining. It’s also (especially ?) targeting ASICs : the more it’s memory-hard, the less they’re likely to dominate. Read the Equihash whitepaper for more information. There are a host of options available, if you’re on a Home edition of Windows and/or want something a bit more robust. I recommend TightVNC: it’s lightweight, simple, cross-platform, and free. Here are the basic setup instructions for TightVNC:
Install your GPU Drivers like you normally would (Next, next, Ok, etc.) and reboot.  Afterward, you know your GPU’s are recognized correctly if you go into Device Manager (search in Windows search bar) and you don’t see any warning marks on your GPU’s and it shows them correctly like this:

Click on the ‘View’ menu to deselect other cryptocurrencies, until only ETH remains. MinerGate will notify you that it’s loading a DAG (Dagger Hashimoto) file. So basically, an ASIC should not have any benefit at all because it’s just general computation. And to top it off, contracts can be released that are specifically ASIC-hard so there would be an active disincentive to using ASICs. Though I’m not sure if that has ever been done or not in the wild.
Download the OpenCL SDK for your GPU platform. I have AMD GPUs. The SDK I downloaded was the AMD APP SDK v2.9.1. I’m not sure what to download for NVidia cards, but you’ll likely get what you need by googling “download NVidia OpenCL SDK”.

Hi, great artical. I’m currently learning all about this and am about to build my rig. I’m planning on using Ethos and have 2 x RX 580 8G and 4 x Nvidia 1070 8G (I’m planning to add more cards over time on my Asrock h110 pro BTC Mobo). My question is this: Can I run this mixture of cards altogether on the current version of Ethos? And will Claymore handle this mixture of cards too?

Overclocking: Overclocking is the simpler of the two methods. Windows and ethOS support these easily through Wattman and ethos-overclocking respectively. The general rule of thumb is that increasing the mem clock by 10% increases your hashrate by 10%. You can also change the core clock. However, this has a smaller effect. Once you’re mining, make sure you watch your rig. The first 24-48hours are essential and will determine if your system is stable or not. If it runs without problems during that period, then you should be fine. I’d recommend staying within reachable distance of your rig during this time as all sorts of issues can occur, and if you’re extremely unlucky, you could end up burning a building down.

I totally agree with hope2907 – that is the same thing that happened to Protoshares – it became taken over by botnets and the general public couldn’t mine anymore. GPU mining seems to be the most decentralized, that is why Scrypt mining is so popular. But whatever you guys decide, I’ll be there to support.
While some people have speculated that Bitmain is working on a new ASIC mining device for Ethereum, there’s no real evidence to back up these claims. Supposedly, this project is code-named Antminer F3 and will consist of three mainboards. With 6 ASIC processors per board, the rumored unit has 72 GB of DRAM memory and is capable of achieving speeds of up to 220 MH/s. It sounds like a dream come true for a lot of Ethereum miners, even though it’s highly unlikely such a system will ever be created.
All of that being said bitcoin mining carries on at an ever more staggering rate. Before the ASICs came around bitcoin already had a substantial mining network built on GPU infrastructure. This initial network effect made the ASICs possible.

@Ursium I am a “hobbyist” miner. I have enjoyed cobbling together mining rigs with spare parts and am more than happy if i just break even. Right now, you are right, the “altcoin” markets are just pump and dump avenues. I do GPU mining, but have friends that do CPU mining (there still are CPU only coins being mined out there).
