The miner originally came with Windows 10 in Chinese with the miner already setup mining to an address in China. Needless to say, I had to change that. Who knew you can’t just change the language on Windows, they require you to buy a new license if you want to change it to English!!! That was not too big of a deal since I didn’t really want to run it on Windows anyway. I started my configuration by following a tutorial on Cryptobadger for setting up one running Ubuntu Linux since it is generally more stable.
We’re specifically mining on an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard powered by an Intel Core i5-7600K quad-core processor and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 2666MHz RAM. It’s more muscle than any miner needs and will surely gobble up a bit more power while mining than is desired. But it’s the simplest of systems we have on hand that’s ready to mine 24/7. CPU horsepower is much less important in a mining rig, so low-power CPUs are preferable at this time.

Plugging these numbers into https://etherscan.io/ether-mining-calculator gives me an expected earning of ~ 0.004790 ETH (USD 0.06) per day or 0.033536 ETH (USD 0.39) per week. My cost of electricity @ ~ USD .17 per kWh is USD 0.816 per day which is 13.6x the value of the ETH earned.

Hello, I have tried to check the calculator and got shocked on the income shown by the calculator today 11/11/2017. For example if I buy 1.5TH/s it shows that I will be paid 0.223638 BTC daily, or be paid 1.565466 BTC in Seven days and be paid Total 20.127420BTC in three months. Is this true? Is this Calculator fake?
Currently, Ethereum uses the Proof of work (PoW) system- this has been the arm supporting blockchain technologies like bitcoin and Ethereum. Proof-of-work refers to the solving of complex equations, which is a basic requirement for a miner to clear for their block to be added to the blockchain. This system has been picked apart for the environmental damage and electric cost it generates. However, through the use of the Dagger Hashimoto algorithm, Ethereum created a way that permits simple home computers to mine efficiently with little expenditure necessary.
Thanks, Steven, very helpful. Not too sure about the DragonMint machine (lots of negative press out there) but Slush does sound reputable. Think my partner and I will jump in and mine Bitcoin and LiteCoin with one machine each.
It depends the difficulty level. I’m not sure where Ethereum is right now, but a megahash rate of around 25 is what most people were getting with IIRC an RX 470 and they were profitably mining a few months ago. A hash rate of 11 MH/s isn’t amazing, but it’s almost half of an RX 470 (which sells for a ridiculous amount of money). You won’t make any money unless Ethereum goes up in value vs your power costs. But using a build like this helps you keep the power cost and build costs lower than had you decided to get a 470 or 480.
A Radeon R9 HD 7990 is available on the market for around $680. The daily power cost of this GPU is $1.08, with the hash rate at 36 MH/s. The return per day stands at $1.29, while its cost per MH/s is $18.89. This model of GPU is giving you a return per year of $469.40.
*While my guides deal with setting up and optimizing AMD’s GPUs, nVidia’s 1060 / 1070 video cards are also excellent for mining. Generally these days I tend to recommend whichever is cheaper (and right now, that’s AMD). But if you find a deal on some nVidia 1070 GPUs, don’t hesitate to grab them—they perform just as well as AMD’s offerings, and are arguably easier to set up (just remember to install nVidia drivers instead of AMD’s if you follow the rest of my guide!).
Cryptocurrency mining is a big buzz topic in technology these days. And why not? Utilizing your computer to digitally mine what seems like free money only begs the question, “where do I sign up?” Your machine will actually be “mining” or processing transactions for a decentralized currency, the hottest variant of which is called Ethereum.  Poised to overtake the industry bellwether Bitcoin, Ethereum has experienced explosive growth with roughly a $35 billion dollar market cap currently.
Mining is the process of adding transaction records to Bitcoin’s public ledger of past transactions (and a “mining rig” is a colloquial metaphor for a single computer system that performs the necessary computations for “mining”. This ledger of past transactions is called the block chain as it is a chain of blocks. The blockchain serves to confirm transactions to the rest of the network as having taken place. Bitcoin nodes use the blockchain to distinguish legitimate Bitcoin transactions from attempts to re-spend coins that have already been spent elsewhere.
The problem is that motherboards with 2 x16 PCIe slots (either 2.0 or 3.0 should work) tend to cost quite a bit. Currently, I believe that people are buying older high end boards and using Celeron processors (which are the lowest tier for socketed processors) in order to get a board that’s within an affordable price bracket. PCIe is an older socket, so in theory you should be able to go back pretty far and find something that works.
This one has become stable and is cranking out about $200-220/mo with minimal work. I have been monitoring it just to prove to myself that it is still working, but it has had no issue since the install of EthOS. Nanopool will also send you a notification email if your machine goes down, so you really don’t have to actively monitor it.
To others who are reading this comment, this tutorial is for a single slot miner. A single slot miner has an overall lower footprint, both in terms of power draw and overall cost, compared to a multi-GPU miner. They are cost-effective only for those who want to get their feet wet since the cost of entry is fairly low.
