The GPU is still the biggest factor in determining mining performance and which card you have matters greatly. AMD cards are still king in total mining performance, just as they were in Bitcoin’s early days. Nvidia microarchitecture (through Maxwell) wasn’t focused on general purpose computing like AMD’s Graphics Core Next. Actual hash rates will vary between different mining software, operating systems, and drivers, but even a GTX 980 Ti can’t keep up with, say, an older mid-range AMD card. Nvidia has made changes in Pascal that make 10-series cards quite capable miners. Then again, if you’re using a recent generation Nvidia card for mining, you’re more likely mining on the side with your current machine rather than making a dedicated mining system out of spare parts.
You can use any personal computer to mine Ethereum, provided the system has a Graphic Card (GPU) with at least 2 GB of RAM. Central Processing Unit (CPU) mining is simply an exercise in frustration. It takes an extended period to complete, and the profits are little thanks to the cost. GPUs are your best bet as they are 200 times faster than CPUs when it comes to mining Ether. AMD cards are more efficient than Nvidia cards as well.
If the payout continued as existing rates …I easily double my investment.. But is impossible…cos by difficulties rate going up… So far daily payout look promising. Just keep my finger cross….thanks GM…:-)
I’d say only as an experiment. The technology behind Ethereum, a big leap over Bitcoin’s underlying technology, may one day prove to be valuable. But cryptocurrency is so ridiculously speculative, it’s only worth taking a moderate risk on. Got my first payout of ~$70CAD(in BTC). I had a bunch of downtime this first week due to tweaking my clocks, drivers, algorithms, etc, so I’m hoping to keep in the $70-80CAD/week range with mining ETH and ZEC for ~2 months. I’ve decided to put invest my weekly payout(+cash to equal $100 total) into whichever currency has hit a low for the day, unless of course BTC is low at the time, in which case I’ll ride it out for a bit. I started with a $70 payout and $30 of my own money, and I’m currently at $120. I know that’s no guarantee of how things will go, but I think playing the currency market is a much better option than dumping more money into cards.

And what energy efficient motherboard + cpu would you recommend for that case? I want to buy 2 RX 460s and maybe bump the watts to 300 I don’t mind as long as I can hash 22 MH/s on the same small machine.
Hi Steemians, a few days ago I had a talk with a friend about Ethereum mining. Last year I invested 50 € in Ethereum Cloud Mining for him for example and now he has 2.3 Ether worth over 550 $. If I had bought Ether directly for 50€ last year, it would be more than 5 ETH worth over 1000 € today. So the question is: What is more profitable in 2017? Buying Ether, or Ethereum Cloud Mining?

Start out small. I don’t recommend starting out by buying hundreds of graphics cards and miners, especially if you have no previous experience with mining. If you start out small you can easily upgrade in the future by either adding rigs to your farm, or by adding graphics cards to your rigs.

Lots of articles on how to do this. There’s even a Linux distro specifically for Ether mining. EthOS. Not free but painless to set up. There’s also free ones. C’mon guys, you can’t have everything spoon fed to you.

Before we get on to comparing the best available Ethereum Mining hardware and the best GPUs in the market, let us take a closer look at what GPUs are and what do you need to keep in mind before you buy a GPU to mine Ethereum with.

As you can monthly profits reduce by near 1/3 every month with estimated total profits plateauing at $2750 around 6 months. A far cry from the $10,000 I was predicted to make. Sadly, this is barely enough money to pay for the rig I built for mining!
I know that the USB interface would cause a bottleneck on most kinds of GPU-related operations, but for some reason, mining doesn’t seem to incur this kind of penalty. From what I know, you should be good to go if you know how to set up this kind of arrangement (I have no idea how).
To minimize the disruptions to your mining and settings you may want to also disable Windows Updates.  If you feel more secure leaving them on, you can do so and just understand there are very frequent updates that sometimes reboot your system without you’re involvement and therefore stop your mining.   
The rest of the computer doesn’t matter much. In general, you want a case that can adequately cool either an RX 460 or RX 470 — but GPUs include their own cooling mechanism. The basic idea behind a case is that it shouldn’t impede the GPU’s ability to cool itself. Some people even choose to do open air builds. An extreme few daisy chain together multiple 470 GPUs on Ikea storage shelves!
Investigate social media channels, speak with former customers and ask pointed questions of operators prior to investing. Ultimately, you should practice the same kind of due diligence that you would for any investment.
Currently you’ll need at least 3GB of dedicated video memory (VRAM) to mine Ethereum, and this VRAM requirement is expected to grow to 4GB in 2018. It’s important to note that if you are planning to mine with a GPU that doesn’t have at least 3GB of VRAM, you won’t be able to!
Cloud mining is basically a service that will allow you to pay for hashing power, which is hosted in data centres and sold in Gigahash/seconds (GH/s). Many cloud mining plans are available online but it is important to choose a reliable provider.
Currently even at overinflated GPU prices you might see a return in ~6 months. In the mining community that seems like an insane amount of time. Crypto is an anomaly though. In business that’s a super win. Even if the timeline goes out to 8 months and then you start profiting it’s still considered a good investment.
Due to the massive demand for Ethereum mining rigs you’ll see cards sold out at most retailers (Nvidia has even put out a statement about it). If you’re willing to pay a premium you can find them at a higher cost but we recommend finding the cards for their retail price. The GeForce 1070 is easier to find from our research.
