This is a very useful site for finding the hash rates on different graphics cards for Ethereum (ETHash), ZCash (EquiHash) and Monero (Cryptonight). The site also shows you the power draws for the graphics cards and will even give you the Amazon links on where to buy them, as well as suggestions for other parts you’d need to improve your mining rig. Ethereum Mining Difficulty Adjustment –  Most mining pools use VARDIFF on their mining pool connections. What does VARDIFF mean? VARDIFF means ‘variable difficulty’. When you connect to a mining pool using variable difficulty, the difficulty of your mining shares will rise and fall based on your hash rate. Your share difficulty will fluctuate such that your mining rig will vary share submission between 4-10 shares per minute. This reduces the load on the mining pool’s server backend while making your miner shares more efficient in terms of helping the mining pool find blocks. I would like to start mining Ether, but my GPU isn’t the greatest and I don’t really want to spend the money on a dedicated rig. Is mining from my CPU (in a Linux environment) still worth the Ether? Or will I not be able to keep up?

I’m wondering if you can help me troubleshoot something with Claymore Miner, though. It randomly crashes on me without any error messages (even when I add pause to the end of the start.bat to check). Is this because of some instability in my hardware? I haven’t overclocked anything and this is a fairly recent installation of Windows 10. Even harder to find than the RX 480 is the AMD RX 470. A year ago, this was the absolute best card for mining. With a slight BIOS mod, it can do 29Mh/s while pulling 140 watts. Just like the other AMD cards listed, my favorite model is the AMD Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ (Model #11256-10-20G).

Ethereum uses a different hashing algorithm to Bitcoin, which makes it incompatible with the special hashing hardware (ASICs) developed for Bitcoin mining. Ethereum’s algorithm is known as Ethash. You may have to ensure you have the correct virtual memory enabled (minimum 16GB). To do this, search for system in the start menu.
