One thing you did not mention however, is you could theoretically mine at break even, and if the Eth value explodes, discover your profit at that juncture. I guess that would make you more a speculator than a miner though?

I assume you’re solely talking about ETH mining drying up, considering this is /r/EtherMining, but why make it seem like the end of days is coming? If ETH dries up, yes it would suck, but it would take maybe an hour to download, reconfigure and re-aim your processing power at a different coin.
As always agree with what you’ve written here. I definitely do think it is profitable for people who already have cards. I still think it could be profitable even at current GPU prices, but for me it is insane to buy more at this point from a risk standpoint, as I’m being ultra risk averse.
Cloud mining is definitely the easiest way to start mining, as you can purchase a mining contract whenever you like. You do not need to setup a rig or even have an internet connection, the company which hosts the miners will do this all for you. You’re only required to pay monthly for the hashing power, however these contracts can turn out to be quite unprofitable, as contracts tend to last for 24 months, and with the networks increasing difficulty you may start losing money every month. Another negative is that you will not be able to sell the rigs, and will not be able to cancel the contracts. However if you do decide to start cloud mining, one of the largest companies for this is Genesis Mining. Nice Hash is another cloud mining company which unlike Genesis does not lock you into a contract and allows you to cancel any time you want, making this an excellent option. Mining Ethereum at this point requires a 3GB GPU because of the size of the DAG file. DAG stands for Directed Acyclic Graph and is essentially a database of the existing blockchain. In order to mine the next block, your hardware needs to be aware of all the existing blocks. As of this writing, the DAG is just over 2GB, and it only gets bigger with each new step, which happens at least once a week. The vast majority of miners load the entire DAG into VRAM. Without sufficient capacity, the GPU can’t even begin mining operations.
Like with CPUs, you can reduce the voltage supplied to the GPU and decrease the power consumed and waste heat produced. Whether or not there’s a trade-off depends on the silicon lottery. A slightly more expensive miner would differ in its PSU and GPU, but otherwise should look identical. Instead of using an RX 460, it might use an RX 470 (or even 480). Unfortunately, the prices of higher end cards has gone through the roof. I wouldn’t advise anything beefier than a 460 — just enough to get your feet wet mining crypto without costing a fortune in build costs and power.

Power related fees can be another obstacle; billing practices and procedures vary in regards to electricity, exceedingly more between different countries, but pricing is commonly calculated in kilowatts per hour. Ideally, having no or low energy costs would be preferable, renewable energy comes to mind, as do other shadowy options (miners in less regulated communities often siphon off of the grid directly, what basically amounts to mining with no overhead).
What do you want to optimise for? Lowest upfront cost per unit hashrate? Lowest ongoing cost (upfront + electricity)? Best hashrate per unit electricity? Lowest heat (and electricity) per unit hashrate?
