Solo mining is not entirely problem free, we have tried with a single GPU for a day and sometime along the day geth got in some kind of loop and was not sending work for new blocks, but was stuck at sending work for an older block that has already been solved. Anyway, as of Claymore v8.0, you can choose between mining Ethereum alone, Ethereum & Decred, Ethereum & Siacoin, Ethereum & Lbry. Based on something said by an old-time Bitcoiner in a video (I’m no expert on altcoins), I’d say Decred is the best choice. Awesome tutorial, very clear and useful …. I have only one question…. If I join nanoppol with a test rig and then, a couple of weeks later I change my hardware for some more enhanced and proper replacing my entire system…. Will I have any trouble or is this transparent to nanoppol? Also, is geth a better option for creating at wallet than myetherwallet for example ???
You should see something that looks like the image on the left (click for full-size). I’ve cropped in on the two areas that we’re interested in (they’re labeled “GPU” and “Memory”). Find them and start by the Frequency to “Dynamic” and the Voltage Control to “Manual” in both areas.

1. You published this article on January 19,2017 and you talk about RX 480, but you recommend a driver that is not for this type of video card. I know that Claymore recommends it, but I think it was long time ago, when he wrote his program.
As you can  see in the dual mining configuration, the last part is “-dcri 25”. That means that the  dual coin is set to mine intensively ,  and it shows how much GPU core is assigned for that task. Yes it’s needed for solo mining too, and needs to be set to 6! This is a very important part because it’s DEPENDANT ON THE GPU SERIES. The only noticeable difference between the RX 570 and RX 580 series is their GPU Core. The memory (used for ethereum mining) is almost the same on those cards, so there is basically no difference in  the ethereum hashrate, but the big difference comes in the GPU Core. The RX 580 series can handle around -dcri 25, don’t go above that because it can reduce your ethereum hashrate. For RX 570 series the optimal -dcri is around 19-22. For some cards even lower as 13, this needs to be tested by yourself. The proper way would be to start with -dcri 10. Then using your keyboard press “+” or “-”, that way you can increase or decrease -dcri by 1, as you will see on the claymore miner. By going up you will see the dual coin hash rate going up, repeat  that until you can start to see the ethereum hashrate decrease, then, after you find that spot reduce -dcri by 3, so you are not pushing the GPU to the limit. On the RX 570 series it’s possible to get a higher hashrate on ethereum with dual mining rather than just solo mining. Optimal for RX 570 is around -dcri 19 , optimal for RX 580 series is around -dcri 25. For some cards it’s possible to go even further, but it’s not worth it to stress the GPU too much.

This is the most important question people want to have an answer for and it’s the most tricky one. There are no optimal or universal values, because on the identical GPU’s the same Overclock/Undervolt settings don’t work the same way. Each GPU is unique and requires individual testing to optimize it properly.

HASH RATE – as described before, Linux is not EFFICIENT and you will not get the same hash rate as on Windows, for example the exact same settings on a GPU on Linux would give you 28.8 MH/s and on Windows you will get 29.3 MH/s.
If you want a low cost of entry into the world of mining, then the AMD RX 480 is an excellent choice. This is because it is a bit older than the AMD Radeon RX 580, so prices are lower – when you can find one in stock. Yep, this is another AMD card that can be difficult to track down thanks to its mining ability. However with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, it achieves a decent hash rate of 28mh/s, and again doesn’t require too much power. There are also versions available with 4GB of GDDR5 RAM, if you’re looking for an even lower cost mining GPU.

This has been discussed in depth many times over. Etherium as it stands is ASIC proof due to the need of memory.The threat of changing to a Proof of Stake is also preventing anyone from developing an ASIC for Etherium.
Profit is the name of the game, so if you are not making money then why are you here, I guess.  This chart is not accounting for payback time, it is simply looking at current profitability with Ethereum priced at $169 (at the time of writing on 5/26/2017).  This chart shows the total profit from one card after the cost of electricity (assuming $0.12kW*h) the resulting number display is pretending everything stays consistent for 30 days.  This chart in all honesty is only good for comparing profitability comparisons between cards as the price of Ethereum is in constant flux.
The value of Bitcoin is one thing that has to be continuously kept on the mind. Whereas it might appear very lucrative today, the markets are not easily predictable, and the price can come down to any amount the next day. Anyone who has an interest in venturing into this market must understand that one fact.
I have grown to really love GPU mining. There is something about it. It is a royal pain in the ass really. They generate tons of heat, use a very measurable and large amount of electricity and take a fair amount of tweaking to get right. While your average Joe might not be able to setup GPU mining it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out and get going either. They are not plug and play like ASICs but they also have market value beyond their mining application. To me, a guitarists, GPU miners are the Tube Amps of the mining world. True, the ASICs are more efficient and cheaper but they don’t have that GPU mining feel. You have to really love GPU mining because, as I said, it can be a royal pain. True, there is a barrier to entry with GPUs. They can be expensive. But they are typically readily available and an individual can get into meaningful GPU mining today for under $200 on their home PC. Having the parts available in retail environments is in stark contrast to the black boxes which are the ASIC distributors. CPU mining is very egalitarian as anyone can do it at the drop of the hat with their PC. This seems fine but the option of kicking up a notch to GPU typed power, especially for the enthusiast, is nice IMHO. If someone wants to invest more into contributing increased transaction processing power it is not as easily salable [with CPUs] as GPUs as CPUs require multiple independent systems to scale while many GPUs can be added to a single system allowing for easier management of fewer overall systems. As a Crypto Evangelist, a true believer if you will, I want the opportunity to provide more to the network than a new user that casually points their PC to a mining pool as a curiosity. While large investors see the profit and ease in ASICs far fewer build large scale GPU operations and those that do are typically not just casual investors looking to capitalize on a trend but enthusiasts willing to do a lot of work along with investing their capital.
SPLASHTOP – If nanopool finds a problem the best way to fix the issue is using remote desktop software to access your rigs. Instead of Splashtop you can use Teamviwer they do the same job. And as your Main GPU is integrated one, the streaming software will not have big impact on the hashrate or stability of the rig.
It is very easy to burn out your GPUs – I’ve done in two, but luckily got warranty replacements. The first just stopped working after one day. And one of the fans got “sticky” in the second one after a few months.
Set the GPU core to 1100 Mhz and then to 1200 Mhz (don’t forget to apply, save profile and then run the overclock.bat) to see the difference in hashrate and the power draw from the wall. (if you see no difference in hashrate after chaning GPU core clock rate you need to restart your PC, sometimes if you change overclock/undervolt a lot it will stop making changes)
One more thing, the Geth terminal is super clunky. If you want to actually use it as a terminal you have to open another instance of the DOS terminal and type “geth attach”. This gives you another Geth window into which you can actually type the javascript API commands.
Without any doubt, the market for Bitcoin mining has been dominated by two major brands; the Avalon and the Antminer.
