The recent drop in Ethereum’s monetary value combined with the vastly increased mining difficulty has severely decreased the profit margin. The ideal GPU when it comes to mining Ethereum is one which offers the highest hash-rate at the lowest power. Currently there are GPUs which provide hash-rates up to 46MH/s at the upper end and at the lower end there are GPUs which offer a hash-rate of about 24MH/s. There are many others which offer a lower hash-rate but they are quite slow and would take a long time to generate Ethereum.

I say I won’t add anymore cards myself, but I got an RX 570 used on facebook market for $250 a few days ago. I think if you take this approach and slowly try to accumulate at only the best prices then you’ll be profitable, maybe just not at the scale most people want. This was my initial strategy even before the major hike, I just ended up being in the right place and the right time the past few weeks.

 – For Power Supplies, you want to double check that your PSU has enough connections to support the number of GPU’s you are running and enough overall wattage to support your total system power draw (and to give yourself some buffer of at least 10-15%). I tried to ask this question on Bitcoin forum for Claytons mining software, but can’t figure out how to post the question in the right place. I have set everything up as you said and am mining Ether at 1600Mh/s, but I am apparently mining Decred as well at 1550Mh/s because the batch file from the Clayton miner has in the batch. If you can find this card at a decent price, it’s a very good performer. By boosting the stock speed via an overclocking utility (such as Afterburner), your hashrate may increase from 10% to over 31 MH/s.
Another option are dedicated mining cards. These cards are made specifically for miners and offer a hash rate and efficiency bump over their gaming orientated counterparts, without the need for you to do much tweaking (overclocking and undervolting). However, most of these cards do not have display connectors making them useless to gamers. This makes the card worthless for resale, so if something happens to the cryptosphere making crypto worthless, say if some global superpower outlaws Bitcoin and other currencies alike making crypto worthless, you won’t be able to get a penny back from these dedicated cards. If you are confident in the success of cryptocurrency however, and are willing to take the risk, these cards are an excellent option.

By default you could purchase NVIDIA GTX 1060/1070 – this is a good option for beginners: there are many brands to choose from, and these cards are universal, so they work both on Ethash and Equihash algorithms.
