I’ve received several questions about configuring drivers, adjusting overclocking/undervolting settings and configuring the mining software. Below, you’ll find a very brief 5 min video showing how to implement these 3 important steps in the mining rig configuration process.
Currently, only the Star Wars Collector’s Edition model appears to be available from Nvidia. While these Jedi Order cards certainly look great, cosmetic features add nothing to the mining performance.
The  Nvidia GTX 1070   is what I’ve been putting in all the rigs I’ve built for folks since about April of 2017 when all the AMD Rx 4 and 5 series cards sold out and doubled in price on secondary markets. It can mine at 30Mh/s while sipping only 100 watts of electricity. After testing several models, my favorite is the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Windforce OC (model # GV-N1070WF2OC-8GD). It has a twin fan design and seems to run cooler than most of the other 1070 models I’ve tested. If that model is unavailable, any twin fan designed 1070 will work well. Blower models like the Gigabyte 1070 Founders Edition mine at the same hash rate, but need more supplemental cooling like a box fan pointed at your mining rig. I’ve linked to Amazon above, but be sure to check eBay as well for availability since Amazon often limits the number of GPU units you can purchase.

In the end, a miner is rewarded for discovering solutions to the challenging math problems through blockchain technology, in the same way Bitcoin mining and Bitcoin cloud mining operate. Like Bitcoin mining hardware, ethereum can be considered as a computational network.

A: 99.9% of Cloud Mining sites are Ponzi schemes or fractional reserve Ponzi’s.  Even though there are a few that have been around a long time, there have been no 3rd party audits of the hashing power sold and profits are usually very low unless you are promoting heavily and getting others to join in (another red flag of ponzi related activity).  Short Answer – Our advice is DO NOT buy into Ethereum Cloud Mining sites or related Deposit Investment/HYIP programs.  
I’ve chosen to go with the RX480 as it’s expected to give 25MH/s at stock settings with a price of $200. Therefore, I’m paying $8/MHs, and the aim is to get this price as low as possible. Therefore, if you see second-hand GPUs where you’re paying less than that, then they might be worth a high consideration.

In the simplest term, GPUs are a form of specialized ether mining computer. GPUs vary in their hash rates and energy consumption. In selecting the most effective rig, it is all about striking the right equilibrium between the how much power you intend your GPU to have and the amount of electricity and energy you are prepared to part with. Rigs having the following GPUs are the most preferred regarding performance.
Bitmain Technologies’ BM1382 calculates 63 hashes per clock cycle (Hz), while their more efficient BM1384 calculates 55 hashes per clock cycle. Similarly, while these hashes per clock cycle are spot-on for the claims regarding the number of cores, BitFury’s BF756C55 is claimed to have 756 cores, but yields around 11.6 hashes per clock cycle. This is because the reference to cores sometimes mean different things, and certain designs result in less straightforward calculation[1]
This mining pool is one of the recommendable Ethereum mining pools for miners. mining Pool Hub was established in October 2014. It was launched as a solo mining pool that was exclusive to its members, but over time, it grew to become a public mining pool. Mining Pool Hub is a pool that does not charge any pool fee. Hence, it is totally free. It has thousands of members currently mining on it. Through its model, members are able to purchase their mining hardware. Members use a part of their mining income to buy more mining power.
Graphic cards are more suitable for handling the recurrent processes that characterize the mining of ether. They offer tremendous speeds of up to 200 times faster than central processing units. Also, ether is better mined by AMD which is more effective than NVIDIA cards.
Joining the ethereum mining pool is next step after you have purchased the correct ethereum hardware.  The reliable mining pool will assist you in getting ongoing payouts. This will be determined when an ether block is solved.
If you want to improve your rig specifically for ethereum mining, you can do it fairly inexpensively. The Radeon RX460 graphics card is an excellent choice, and it is less than $120. It can give you a smooth gaming experience without breaking the bank. Be mindful that because it only has 2GB of DDR5 memory, you may have to upgrade your card later down the line.
That is an excellent hash rate as long as your cards don’t overheat. I like to keep my GPU’s around 65 degrees Celsius. Also, the reason I dial mine back to around 31Mh/s is because power goes up significantly once you bump the cards past 32Mh/s.
Depending what you do, more VRAM will improve your performance. The present difference between a 4-gig and 8-gig version of the same card can be up to 5 MH/s. MH/s stands for millions of hashes per second, the speed of the hardware solving mathematical algorithms to get Ethereum.
Also, this calculator shows that DAG size will only reach the point to render 3GB unusable around the end of this year (block ~6.9 million, epoch 231), not epoch 180 like shown in the article. Not sure which to trust…
A Radeon R9 HD 7990 will cost you $680. Its power cost per day is lower than the R9 295X2 at $1.08 but its hash rate is significantly lower at 36 MH/s. Its return per day is $1.29 while its cost per MH/s is $18.89, giving it a return per year of $469.40.
Another risk, though small, is that if you decide to mine on the ETHash algorithm you have to make sure you have enough VRAM (Video Random Access Memory) on the graphics card, as the networks DAG (Directed Acrylic Graph) will be stored on the VRAM. So if you do not have a large enough VRAM size on your GPU you will not be able to mine that coin. At the moment, Ethereum’s DAG file size is 2.1 GB meaning that you will have to mine on a card with more than 2 GBs of VRAM. You can check the DAG size for some popular coins using this website.
Thanks for the great guide. As a 72 year old, trying to figure things out isn’t always easy. I tried to ask this question on Bitcoin forum for Claytons mining software, but can’t figure out how to post the question in the right place. I have set everything up as you said and am mining Ether at 1600Mh/s, but I am apparently mining Decred as well at 1550Mh/s because the batch file from the Clayton miner has in the batch. When choosing a mining group, it is important to join one with low rates that provide reliable returns. You should also consider the location of the cluster server when you decide which is best for you. To obtain the best results, you must choose a server that is close to your geographical location. This will reduce the latency times and improve the mining performance of the equipment.
Haters incoming in 3.. 2.. 1.. Seriously, there’s going to be a lot of AMD RX580 religious followers who are going to really trash this. Because they’re too stupid to realize that making a profit is more important than their AMD religion. And of course, if the RX580 prices were reasonable it would be the best pick. But there is no doubt for anyone with a brain that the GTX 1060 is the king right now in price/payback ratio.

Custom BIOS. Custom BIOS’ are trickier. While it’s easy to use a tool such as AtiFlash to flash your GPU, bare in mind that it is risky. You will also need to find a BIOS that is suitable for your GPU unless you’re proficient at tweaking it yourself with a tool like PolarisBiosEditor. However, this can have the largest gain. For example, for the RX480 a custom BIOS can raise its hash rate to 30Mhs+ which is a considerable 30% improvement!
