If you want a low cost of entry into the world of mining, then the AMD RX 480 is an excellent choice. This is because it is a bit older than the AMD Radeon RX 580, so prices are lower – when you can find one in stock. Yep, this is another AMD card that can be difficult to track down thanks to its mining ability. However with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, it achieves a decent hash rate of 28mh/s, and again doesn’t require too much power. There are also versions available with 4GB of GDDR5 RAM, if you’re looking for an even lower cost mining GPU.
When choosing the CPU, you only need the bare minimum. I wouldn’t recommend getting the absolute cheapest, but one or two points above. The reason for this, is that some extra processing power is useful when setting up and makes reboots slightly quicker. I chose to go with the Intel Celeron G1840.
I purchased 6 1070 FTW edition GPUs and they have two 8-pin power connectors each. Do I need to get more powers supplies to accommodate the extra 8-pin slot? Also, should I have connector branch from the power supply to both 8-pin slots or give each slot on the GPU its own connector to the power supply?
You may have to ensure you have the correct virtual memory enabled (minimum 16GB). To do this, search for system in the start menu. Open system and on the left hand side click ‘Advanced System Settings.’ Go under the advanced tab, under performance settings, and advanced again. Then click ‘Change’ under virtual memory. Uncheck the box that states to ‘Automatically manage paging file size for all drives’ and then input a custom size of 16384 (or whatever is the maximum allowable value) into the Initial and Maximum size fields. This will prevent you from having any errors with virtual memory.

We talked to NVIDIA about this and they said it’s because the Ethereum base code fits the GDDR5 latency characteristics better than GDDR5X. So, when it comes to Ethereum mining a GeForce GTX 1070 is better to have than the GeForce GTX 1080. That said the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti uses GDDR5X memory and is getting 32 MH/s.
Wenn du die Hardware sowieso da hast, dann könnte es sich selbst beim aktuellen Strompreis lohnen. Wenn du jetzt kaufen willst, käme sowieso nur die GTX 1070 in frage. Davon 3 Stück und wenn alles so bleibt wie es ist, wovon ich nicht ausgehe, hat sich das ca. in einem Jahr aromatisiert. Wäre mir ein viel zu hohes Risiko.
Das Prinzip ist sehr einfach: Anstatt sich selber Mining-Equipment anzuschaffen und zu betreiben wird die Rechenkapazität in der Cloud gemietet bzw. teilweise sogar gekauft. Die Cloudanbieter stellen die Infrastruktur hierfür Verfügung und betreiben dann auch die Miner. Bei einem Mietvertrag ist der Betrieb meist direkt mit inkludiert, sollte Rechenkapazität gekauft werden, bekommen die Cloudanbieter einen Teil der neu geschürften Bitcoins. Somit muss keine eigene Hardware beschafft und betrieben werden.
I totally agree with hope2907 – that is the same thing that happened to Protoshares – it became taken over by botnets and the general public couldn’t mine anymore. GPU mining seems to be the most decentralized, that is why Scrypt mining is so popular. But whatever you guys decide, I’ll be there to support.
Okay so I have read about ethereum’s asic resistance… it’s designed to be profitable with GPU’s and they dont want asics to “destroy” that like it happened with bitcoin and scrypt miners. But I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be profitable? I understand that the Ethash algorithm needs lots of memory and that’S not cheap. But why hasn’t a company just produced them in bulk for a lower price and made it profitable ?!

i got 1 out of the 5 GPUs to mine… attempting to start another ethminer instance specifying next card crashes that specific instance (while the first one keeps hashing away)… so no dice with getting all 5 running on win10
The ethminer software uses the ethpool mining pool for mining, the pool fee is 2% and there is a flat fee of 0.01 Ether per payout charged with minimum payout of 1 Ether, also the pool is beta and there could be some issues. The geth software contains only CPU miner while ethminer supports CPU (up to about 2 times faster than geth CPU mining), OpenCL mining for AMD (also works on Nvidia) and CUDA GPU mining. You can use OpenCL mining on Nvidia GPUs as well, could work on older GPUs that do not work with the CUDA miner. If you have integrated GPU it can also be detected as OpenCL capable and the miner may try to run on it, so you can try to use the –opencl-platform and –opencl-device command line parameters to avoid the problem.
At the time of writing this article, the aforementioned mining rig would cost around $2,250USD and would be capable of producing around 0.5 Ethereum per month. This is about $250 per month before variable costs. That means within 9 months you’ll have paid off your initial investment. This is of course assuming the price of Ethereum stays the same.
Sidenote: If mining isn’t your thing, and you are just interested in purchasing some cryptocurrency as part of your investment portfolio, I personally use and recommend Coinbase. I would also recommend keeping your coins safe using the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet. This hardware wallet supports all the major cryptos including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Zcash, Dash, Stratis, Ripple, Bitcoin Cash, Ark, Expanse, ubiq, Pivx, Vertcoin and Viacoin. Did I miss any?
If you’re building a dedicated mining rig, then you probably want your mining rig to boot up and start mining automatically, without any user intervention. We’ll need to enable auto-login for that to be possible.
Now after Windows is setup properly, download a tool called DDU,   That tool will uninstall your current driver (even your integrated GPU) and block Windows from automatically installing GPU drivers. That’s important so that Windows does not install an outdated driver! It will ask you to run in “safe mode” but that is not necessary. When you run the program just click on “Clean and restart”. We want to manually download and install the right drivers.
While cryptocurrency is typically a safer investment than many other things, there are some bad apples in the industry that mean we have to be on the lookout when we trust someone with our coins or hardware. If you mine locally, you don’t have to worry about a company just disappearing off the face of the Earth with your hard earned profits or hardware. On the flip side, you also need to be conscious of your own security and make sure your mining rig(s) are protected or insured against theft or hardware failure.
If you see 0/0, the DAG probably isn’t loaded properly, or you were impatient with geth –rpc and it didn’t sync up, now you’re working on some old block, hashing away, because you didn’t sync properly.
For 12/13 GPU rigs get a slightly better CPU (60$-100$) cause it will be a bit faster when working on the Rig especially when changing GPU’s from Graphics to Compute mode in AMD Settings and using streaming software (Team Viewer, Splashtop)
