Any 64-bit edition of Windows 10 should work fine (a 32-bit OS is not capable of running the Ethereum mining software). Windows 7 and 8 will work as well (as long as they’re 64-bit versions), although you may need to do a bit of extra work to recognize all of your GPUs if you’re running more than 4. The guide is written assuming that you have Windows 10, but the steps for 7/8 should be pretty similar.
The next coin to embrace GPU mining is going to do quite well I think. Since Ethereum is ready to launch in the next months the stars have aligned in that it is launching at a time coincident with the rolling out of the first wave of Scrypt ASICs. If it becomes GPU minable it will have an instant support network of well oiled GPU transaction processors eager to switch to a more profitable network. Since Ethereum is also a revolution to the 1.0 cryptos this instant acceptance by large amounts of processors should only serve to assist it in its adoption and notoriety in a bitcoin-centric environment. It was this phenomenon that gave legs to the non-revolutionary Litecoin.
Mist also contains Geth, a popular command line interface. You may choose to get only the latest Geth app for your system, it’s able to perform all the functions of Mist (and more) from the command line. Geth (an abbreviation for “go-ethereum”) allows you and your miner to interact more directly with the Ethereum network but Geth definitely requires some programming knowledge.
I can understand you not wanting a ton of scrypt coin mining rigs turned to Ethereum right away, but also consider that a big reason Scrypt took off was it gave former Bitcoin miners a new platform for their hardware after ASIC made GPU mining basically impossible. The same thing could be happening to scrypt soon, with a number of ASIC miners having been announced now.
The same thing applies to Ethereum. The only way to utilize Ethereum is with the product from mining. However, mining Ethereum means more than increasing the volume of Ether in circulation. It is also necessary for securing the Ethereum network as it creates, verifies, publishes, and propagates blocks in the blockchain.

In the early days of Bitcoin Core (BTC), mining used to be done using the CPU on your computer. Nowadays though as the amount of people mining has increased the difficulty of Bitcoin Core mining has also increased too. This high difficulty and hash rate has mostly been fueled by the introduction of ASIC mining chips. Bitcoin Core uses SHA-256 cryptographic hash function to the blocks and create the hash for each block. This encryption is what protects the transactions in the block from being altered.

I am telling you right now that with the broad innovation that Ethereum brings to the table combined with an instant network of transaction processors eager to climb onboard would give Ethereum a fantastic start. Far better than building a new processing network. If you read my above post “Ode to GPU mining” you’ll see that GPU mining is and has shown to be very well distributed and provides excellent and accessible avenues for true enthusiasts to really contribute above and beyond average users who will probably care more about the functionality of Ethereum more than mining it.
A miner is an investor that devotes time, computer space and energy to sorting through blocks. When the mining process hits the right harsh, they will submit their solutions to the issuer. After verification, the issuer of the currency offers rewards which are portions of the transactions they helped in verifying. They also offer digital coins in exchange for the work of miners. The result of digital mining is called proof of work system. Some currencies depend on this system alone while other use a combination of proof of stake and proof of work.
Ethereum uses a different hashing algorithm to Bitcoin, which makes it incompatible with the special hashing hardware (ASICs) developed for Bitcoin mining. Ethereum’s algorithm is known as Ethash. It’s a memory-hard algorithm; meaning it’s designed to resist the development of Ethereum-mining ASICs. Instead, Ethash is deliberately best-suited to GPU-mining.
You have said that dagger requires a lot of memory per thread. How much per thread? And will ethereum, by default, use all threads of an i7? I have specifically upgraded my memory for ethereum. I have 20 Mb right now. Could go up to 32 Mb.
Last but not least, if you compare AMD RX vs Nvidia GTX, you’ll find more GDDR5 memory along with a higher bandwidth (nice for memory-hard cryptos like ours), and much more shading units ! Some laborers ! Good point for AMD, whereas Nvidia gets better when it comes to frequencies. Usually both clock speed and turbo clock speed are higher, so it can meet gamers’ expectations for framerate in complex scenes.
10. If miner cannot generate DAG file, check environment variables (see Readme), check if your GPU has 3GB memory at least, and check if you have enough virtual memory (pagefile). If all this does not help, try to install more physical RAM.
Today we’re going to take a quick look at how current generation GPUs, along with a few older ones, perform when put to the task of Ethereum mining. Cryptocurrency mining is big news at the moment and it seems just about everyone wants in on the action. While cryptocurrency is typically a safer investment than many other things, there are some bad apples in the industry that mean we have to be on the lookout when we trust someone with our coins or hardware. On the flip side, you also need to be conscious of your own security and make sure your mining rig(s) are protected or insured against theft or hardware failure.

With $0.4320 as its daily power cost, the cost per MH/s of this GPU is $9.13. This will bring a daily return of $1.15, which can be translated to $418.16 per year. The cost of this GPU is also very friendly, as it’s on sale at Amazon now.
There are many tutorials and how-tos out there when it comes to mining Ethereum – and many of them are contradicting each other. Newcomers tend to quickly lose their motivation wading through all of this, which is why we prepared a quick and dirty tutorial on how to transform a Windows 10 PC with two Radeon RX 480s into a working mining rig. This rig will reliably crunch at 51 Megahashes a second (MH/s), which currently earns you above 300 euros a month. You do have to subtract electricity costs from this, however – in Gemany this would be around 80 euros a month. Please be aware that the ETH price is liable to collapse at some point. You probably shouldn’t be buying GPUs just for mining, then. Carefully think about how much you’ll spend and would earn in return before embarking on this project.
