After that, you should see a list of projects on the right hand side. Find ‘ethminer’, right click on the name, and select Build. This will build the project from source. You’re going to see hundreds of warnings pile up in the warnings box, but it should finish with “Build project succeeded”, and it should have zero errors. If it doesn’t say succeeded, and it has errors, something is wrong.
As the price of Ethereum hovers around $300, you may be wondering to yourself whether or not it’s worthwhile to begin mining. Like Bitcoin, Ethereum is a proof-of-work coin that uses miners to confirm network transactions. Extra Fans. Especially if you have multiple rigs, then make sure you attach some additional fans to your case/ housing. 6/16/2017 Update – We have now have an article posted on GeForce GTX 1060 mining for those that are interested in how that GPU model does. After tweaking the EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 FTW+ we managed to get over 22 MH/s with the card running so cool that the fans didn’t even run!

Claymore’s miner doesn’t need DAG files now because the GPU can compute the DAG in under 5 seconds. Create an asic designed to do exactly that, and you might get that down to a handful of clock cycles.
   If you mine ETC on some pool that does not accept wallet address but requires Username.Worker instead, the best way is to specify “-allcoins etc”, in this mode devfee mining will be on ETC pools and DAG won’t be recreated at all.
On the other hand, GPUs are great calculators for anything, and with a push of a button you can mine a different coin. Now you have the choice – picking and choosing to mine and which coin to mine. This gives GPUs the upperhand and can greatly increase profits.
Please advice if the second GPU (from previous post, GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 G1 GAMING 8GB (GV-N1070G1 GAMING-8GD) would be a right choice for the rig or there are some differences that I may experience in overclocking/drivers, e.t.c.. Thanks in advance,
Third, select the Graphics card you intend to use for mining. The calculator automatically enters the correct hashrate and power consumption. If your card isn’t listed or you’ve modified its performance, select the Custom option and enter the relevant figures manually. Note that GPU hashrates are entered in (Megahash per second aka MH/s; denoting millions of calculations per second).

A few years ago, after reading the paper by pseudonym author “Satoshi Nakamoto” on Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System describing a distributed trust solution to the open network, the sense of computational beauty about it’s concepts and solutions propelled my interest to try out Bitcoin mining. Unlike ASICs, your GPU is capable of mining different coins. You could mine Ethereum, Monero, Bitcoin Gold, Zcash, Electroneum, and many others all with the same GPU. If you’re interested, there’s an entire subreddit devoted to the more accessible GPU mining, located here. 
Go to your EC2 console in AWS and change the zone to US East (N.Virginia). This zone happens to be the cheapest for the type of instance we’ll be using, and also contains a community AMI that has all the required mining libraries already installed for instant use.

This video card can be tweaked to run up to 32Mh/s when mining Ethereum. However, it really shines when mining Zcash at 715 sol. It tends to cost a fair bit more than the 1070, though. The Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti would be my choice if the previous 4 GPU’s listed were unavailable or if my primary goal was to mine Zcash.
Some of my GPU’s can only be reduced to 70% power draw limit, if I go under that limit I lose heavy on ethereum hashrate, so keep an eye on that. In my case it happened because on some GPU’s I can’t get the Core Clock to work above 50 MHz without a crash or freeze. That’s probably because they are low quality cheap GPU’s. On most NVIDIA cards this setting should work properly.
Hi, great artical. I’m currently learning all about this and am about to build my rig. I’m planning on using Ethos and have 2 x RX 580 8G and 4 x Nvidia 1070 8G (I’m planning to add more cards over time on my Asrock h110 pro BTC Mobo). My question is this: Can I run this mixture of cards altogether on the current version of Ethos? And will Claymore handle this mixture of cards too?
For AMD,  install Radeon Software Crimson Edition 15.12 and the OpenCL SDK Package. Depending on your GPU, this might not be the correct driver. So if you’re having issues, check the Ethereum Forum for advice.
For this first update to our exploration of Ethereum mining performance, we’re adding six graphics cards in the entry-level and mid-range categories. We’re also preparing a second update that’ll include high-end GPUs. Beyond our original line-up, the list of contenders now also includes:
-mclock   set target GPU memory clock speed, in MHz. If not specified or zero, miner will not change current clock speed. You can also specify values for every card, for example “-mclock 1200,1250,1200,0”.
More specifically, the miners will run the block’s unique header metadata (including timestamp and software version) through a hash function (which will return a fixed-length, scrambled string of numbers and letters that looks random), only changing the ‘nonce value’, which impacts the resulting hash value.
Well, firstly choose one you’ve encountered several times in forums and articles. Make sure it’s not a scam. Are there active miners ? Is this a beta service ? Pools are usually dedicated to a cryptocurrency, but they tend to create series of pools with the same brand, one for each currency. There are also “multipools” (auto-switching cryptopools), see section VI. Moreover, most pools are not free. They include a fee, usually 1 to 3 %. Go and read their Terms of Service to find it. Then, look at the specs. Does it support : stratum protocol, statistics (with hashrate reporting), a clear payout scheme ? The following services are appreciated : SSL connexion, alerts, payment threshold, no registering (“anonymous”).
As most altcoin algorithms are memory heavy, ASICs would not be faster then GPUs as memory speed would bottleneck device as ASICs and GPUs use same memory. Only gain from ASICs would be fact, that they would be more power efficient, but impact on mining would not be as near as close as it was when BTC went from GPUs to ASICs when we say massive increase in performance and massive drop on power usage at same time. And that is biggest reason why there are non and most likely wont be one in near future.
Miners come to consensus about the transaction history while preventing fraud (notably the double spending of ethers) – an interesting problem that hadn’t been solved in decentralized currencies before proof-of-work blockchains.
If you’ve looked into ASIC miners, you probably know how Bitcoin is mined and the general idea behind it. It can be a very lucrative practice if you know how to do it right and do it safely. But if you’re looking for a quick answer to the question of whether or not you can use an ASIC to mine Ethereum, I can easily say, “No.” If you’re looking for how you can actually mine Ethereum, there’s a longer answer ahead of you…
When you dive into the world of GPU mining you’ll quickly find that to make any serious money that you’ll need to invest in a fair bit of hardware. Let’s go trough the hardware that one would likely need if they wanted to build a 6  or 7 GPU ethereum mining machine. Over at the Ethereum Community Forums you’ll find hundreds of threads about building a 6-7 GPU mining machine and you can make some pretty good money off a system like that. With 7 AMD Radeon RX 480 video cards that have been optimized for mining you should be able to get around 200 MH/s when mining ethereum, so if you plug that into a profit calculator you are looking at making a profit of $12,870 per year at the current difficulty and ETH price of $245. That’s guessing the rig uses around 1,000 Watts 24/7 and electric costs $0.1265 KW/h. (Please keep in mind the price of ethereum could always drop to zero or skyrocket, so think long and hard before you buy hardware to do this.)
If everything works correctly, you should see output that recognizes your graphics cards, and then starts chugging away. You should also see your amount of hashes processed per second be non-zero (and a high number, at that). If you see both of those things, you’re golden. If not, I recommend checking the GPU mining forum as other people have likely ran into similar if not the same issues.
Unless you are in China and have the contacts and money to get the ASICs early it is basically a losing game. You are simply subsidising the Chinese manufacturers and the miners who they collude with.
