The whole desire to switch to PoS is because PoW is ecologically irresponsible, however there were no viable energy efficient consensus algos at the time. PoS had to be researched and developed and can only be implemented once it is fully validated.
Even harder to find than the RX 480 is the AMD RX 470. A year ago, this was the absolute best card for mining. With a slight BIOS mod, it can do 29Mh/s while pulling 140 watts. Just like the other AMD cards listed, my favorite model is the AMD Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ (Model #11256-10-20G).
Change power options so that the computer automatically turns itself on whenever power is restored. The reason for this is two-fold: first, it’ll make sure that your miner automatically starts up after a power outage. Second, it makes powering the computer on much easier if you don’t happen to have a power switch connected to the motherboard.
Important: The combination of the password you just used to create this address *and* the associated encrypted key file is what gives you control over your new wallet address. If lose either of these, you’ve also lost control of your wallet and all of the coins associated with it—and there is literally nothing that anyone will be able to do to help you. Remember your password, and keep multiple backups of your key file(s)!
The Titan Xp can be overclocked to 42 MH/s, but it will consume 300 W when pushed that hard. It achieves an excellent hash rate without too much expenditure of power. Meanwhile, its top-end AMD rival, the RX Vega 64, achieves a very similar performance for about half the price.
The -F option tells ethminer where geth lives. I’ve been assuming that you’re installing geth and ethminer on the same Windows machine. If so, then “http://localhost:8545” is the address of geth’s service for sending work to ethminer. If you installed geth on a different machine, you’ll have to provide ethminer with geth’s IP address instead of localhost.
Settling on a GPU is a complex task and you can browse plenty of advice about which ones are the most profitable based on hash rate performance, power consumption and the initial expense of the card. You probably want to set up a mining rig, a machine that might be composed of multiple GPUs and might take a week to build.
That’s why miners ‘pool’ together their computational power into ‘mining pools’, to improve their chances of solving the cryptographic puzzles and earning ether. Then, they split the profits proportional to how much power each miner contributed.
Megahashing performance of Radeon cards is still top dog, but it doesn’t make much sense going past the R9 390/x as the price/performance metric makes little sense in that regards.  Going from 2560 stream processors to 4096 doesn’t net much value, suspect something fishy with the VRAM is going on here.  That suspicion also bleeds over in the GeForce cards with the poor performance of the GTX 1080 once again suspecting something with the G5X coming into play.  But when it comes to the hashing rate of the GTX 1070 my eyes popped a bit, after all the skyrocketing prices of RX x70/x80 parts are starting to make it look rather attractive.  If you’re wondering why the GTX 1050 is sitting at 0 it’s because it simply doesn’t have the VRAM capacity to mine Ethereum, we left it in the charts for illustrative purposes only.  And because I forgot to delete it before making the charts.
Haha, gotcha! I’m not actually going to tell you how to install geth. That’s because they have pretty good Windows installation instructions on their project wiki, under the heading Building From Source. You’ll want to ignore step #1 (you’ve already got git, and you don’t need mercurial). Also, step #5 is likely to be the hardest and most error prone part. I’d follow this guide for setting your environment variables if you don’t know how. Note that after setting your environment variables, you’ll need to close and reopen any command prompts or PowerShells for those settings to take effect.
* If the market were still lucrative, the GPU makers would not be selling all of their stock, which means it is a near certainty that either the GPU makers or someone with connections has already snapped up a healthy share
