The official Frontier release of geth only supports a CPU miner natively. We are working on a GPU miner, but it may not be available for the Frontier release. Geth however can be used in conjunction with ethminer, using the standalone miner as workers and geth as scheduler communicating via JSON-RPC.
CoinYourBit, Google loves to mark all the mining software as a possible malware… we are constantly asking to get the site reviewed and get these false warnings removed. The source code is linked in the article for anyone that may have some concerns, you can compile yourself or download some of the other pre-compiled binaries.
Here is a look at how the hash rates compare between epoch 140 and 190. As you can see the R9 390 series performance remains much the same while all GeForce 10 cards remain exactly the same, with the exception of the 3GB 1060 which runs out of memory. The once mighty RX 580 sees a massive 35% reduction in performance which is awful news for those that invested in the RX 400 or 500 series for the long haul.
Windows 10 introduced forced updates as a pretty controversial “feature”, and not having control over when your mining rig is rebooted to install OS patches could be frustrating. We’ll be setting things up so that your mining rig automatically begins mining any time Windows boots, so leaving automatic updates in place certainly wouldn’t be disastrous if you want to skip this section. But if you’d prefer to retain control over downtime, here are some workarounds:
Once you’re mining, make sure you watch your rig. The first 24-48hours are essential and will determine if your system is stable or not. If it runs without problems during that period, then you should be fine. I’d recommend staying within reachable distance of your rig during this time as all sorts of issues can occur, and if you’re extremely unlucky, you could end up burning a building down.
I am new to mining and want to build a rig. I think I have enough money invest in a very nice setup. Can you please tell me if the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Windforce OC is the best GPU available on the market right now?
Moreover, each GPU is powered through the PCIe 2.0 x16 slot and (for our powerful GPUs) an additional cable (6 or 8 pins) plugged into the PSU. Problem : when the GPU is connected with a PCIe 2.0 x1 slot instead of a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot… how is the GPU powered ? Well, the answer is on the USB-riser : you’ll power it thanks to a Molex cable. Finally, will you be able to plug all your cables on the PSU ? Will you have enough cables ? This should be an important criteria.
I am telling you right now that with the broad innovation that Ethereum brings to the table combined with an instant network of transaction processors eager to climb onboard would give Ethereum a fantastic start. Far better than building a new processing network. If you read my above post “Ode to GPU mining” you’ll see that GPU mining is and has shown to be very well distributed and provides excellent and accessible avenues for true enthusiasts to really contribute above and beyond average users who will probably care more about the functionality of Ethereum more than mining it.
However, once you have your GPU cards, they will need power. Therefore, the second most important factor is how much your card will consume, and how much you’ll need to pay for this. In order, to calculate this, you’ll need to find out how much power it uses and how much you need to pay per KW/h. These are respectively 150W and $0.10 per KW/h for me. To calculate the per hour cost just convert W to kW (by diving by 1000) and multiply together, so for me the rig would cost 0.15*0.1= $0.015/hour to keep alive. This amounts to $0.36/ day or $10.80/month.
Running a CPU you might be able to generate 0.15 Mega Hashes whilst with a decent GPU with enough memory you could be doing upwards 25 Mega Hashes (you can choose a GPU to mine ether here and use our guide on how to choose a GPU to mine ether). So in terms of total efficiency, taking into account electrical costs, a GPU is definitely worth it even if it costs you $200.
This guide is magnificent, and easy to follow. Are there any good alternatives for storing ether? I’m mining at 26 MHS, and poloniex will not update my balance until i’ve mined 1 ethereum total, that might be a while.
If you’re connected and things are running smoothly, geth should eventually connect to peers and import the blockchain. When it’s close to the current block height (you can check the current block height at http://stats.ethdev.com), you’ll want to start running ethminer.
There is a situation where ASICs are beneficial. If you have a large equipment budget, access to very low cost electricity, and you are OK at sticking to one coin for the long run no matter what – ASICs are by far the best choice for you. However, if you want flexibility and freedom from a singular coin, GPUs are the way to go.
my balance 0x2d529425edf49cf53e8b7e52b10177d9160f715e, i have about 12 ethe in my balance,but i type: web3.fromWei(eth.getBalance(eth.coinbase), “ether”) in consonle, my balance have 0 ethe,i type in consonle : eth.sendTransaction({from: ‘0x2d529425edf49cf53e8b7e52b10177d9160f715e’, to: ‘0x263d845a19110802000139cbb7a4bbf2b2b8d6c0’, value: web3.toWei(1, “ether”)})
Disclosure: Mining metrics are calculated based on a network hash rate of 232,030 GH/s and using a ETH – USD exchange rate of 1 ETH = $ 723.40. These figures vary based on the total network hash rate and on the ETH to conversion rate. Block reward is fixed at 3 ETH and future block reward reductions are not taken into account. The average block time used in the calculation is 15 seconds. The electricity price used in generating these metrics is $ 0.12 per kWh. Network hash rate varies over time, this is just an estimation based on current values.
IMPORTANT – Always work with the original BIOS of your cards, don’t download random BIOS online cause you can’t be sure they are made for your card type, even if they are the same model that does not mean they have the same bios. It’s very important to work with the original card BIOS to reduce the unnecessary risk to the minimum.
There are couple of tricks that most people don’t know. On most of GTX 1060 and 1070 GPU’s you can reduce power draw by 50%! That can make GTX 1070 give around 32 MH/s for only 80W from the wall making it the most efficient GPU.
To minimize the disruptions to your mining and settings you may want to also disable Windows Updates.  If you feel more secure leaving them on, you can do so and just understand there are very frequent updates that sometimes reboot your system without you’re involvement and therefore stop your mining.
“But the key goal that we are trying to achieve with this fork is to build a perpetually ASIC-resistant version of Bitcoin,” said Robert Kuhne, another Bitcoin Gold contributor, in explaining the purpose of the project to Bitcoin Magazine .
Many popular opinion doubts about the value of Bitcoin or Ethereum. The computational power in the form of electricity consumption is the value of the coin. Currently, generating 1 Bitcoin will cost approximately $1000 USD electricity, where the intrinsic value of Bitcoin is stored. While you are receiving the printed $100 USD bill, that bill has no intrinsic value other than a piece of paper promise. The $100 bill does not have any backing stored to retain it’s value (no equivalent gold value is stored along with USD anymore). But the Bitcoin or Ethereum has the value stored by the difficulty of their generation.
Yes you won’t get everything initially. I wanted to sell this program first for little donation but over time it started to look like a worse idea. The main issue was that noone want to buy some random program which claims to do xy.
-t tells ethminer how many GPUs you want to mine with. This is highly dependent on the amount of GPUs in your system, so can be confusing, but is very important. My system has (1) R9 295×2 card, (1) R9 280x card, and (1) onboard Intel Graphics chip. Though I have three physical GPUs, Windows actually registers four because the R9 295×2 card has two cores. So, with four cores, what I’m telling ethminer to do by passing the ‘-t 3’ option is to use the first three (thankfully, the AMD cores) and ignore the onboard Intel graphics chip. We compiled ethminer to use AMDs OpenCL code above, so ethminer will crash if it tries to mine using the onboard chip using AMDs code. Safely ignored, everything should work fine.

Dear John, I’m experiencing a problem that showed up today, after an unwanted windows update (that I was stopping for about 3 weeks), my mining rig slowed down a 35% in hash rate. I have windows 10. Are you or anyone else you know having the same problem ?
Was meint ihr dazu?
I know Panda is packaged GPU’s but I’m not sure OP is aware enough of ethash’s reliance on commodity memory architecture and how that precludes ‘ASIC’ (Application Specific Integrated Circuit, rather than ‘black box with fans’) from being developed. So I didn’t want to get too technical.
