You’re confusing. Considering risers in bullet no.3. you first say that SATA to 4-pin molex is unsafe because of SATA, and then you say that SATA to 6-pin PCIe molex is safe. WTH ? The current goes though the same “unsafe” SATA cable.

The statement that you need a big investment is not true neither (depending on what you call big). I have a small rig with 4 RX580 8 GB and it costed me 1500€. I started with one GPU and than gradually expanded. I buy my GPU’s at around 300€, which is I think reasonably priced.
However, stability was non-existent when I was setting this up with Ubuntu. I was only getting runtimes of 2-4 hours before it would crash. It hung up for all kinds of reasons, but most of the time it disappeared from my internal network, so I couldn’t remotely manage it. It also managed to crash my router multiple times. I received the miner 4 days before leaving for Italy, so I got a chance to build the machine and then start to do configuration. The last night before leaving, I wiped Windows off of the SSD, installed Ubuntu fresh again, and crossed my fingers that it would run for the 2 weeks I was gone. This final time I got 4 days of successful mining before it crashed while I was gone and there was nothing I could do about it.

You do have some great information on mining with the GTX 1070, thank you. But you don’t mention the 1070 Ti, how come? According to other research I have found that the 1070 Ti is actually more efficient, and faster than the 1070 so overall it can cost less and mine more.

How is it possible for the “Conservative” scenario to be higher than the base price? Good question, and i’m glad you brought it up. The Monero currency has been not only really volatile, but drifting upwards at a pretty high rate.

Unless you build rigs out of totally second-hand parts, which will take more time to procure and get running reliably, you are not going to build 1 GH for “a couple grand”. A reasonable rig, using say new rx480, which is great bang for the buck, lower power consumption, etc., you should be thinking $1600-$1800 per rig, minimum, and 6 rigs – call it $10k. That’s going to pull at least 50amps of power at the wall, 6 KWh 24×7, comparable heat output, etc. The $10k above, doesn’t include the fans, blowers, etc. you’ll need to keep the HW from burning up.
