The ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ is another excellent choice for mining, with support for up to 13 GPUs. However, it currently costs about the same as Asus’s mining board, and for the money I’d rather stick with Asus. If you know that you’ll definitely stick to a single PSU and a small handful of GPUs (e.g.: the majority of us), this is a fine choice, especially if you find a deal on it.
Very good guide and an interesting read. I was wondering, lets say you can only lay hands on 3 gpu’s initially. Is it worth bringing up the rig with half gpu’s and then adding the rest as you can find them?
3) Hard Drive – You need a hard drive to store your operating system and your software for mining. A standard SSD drive will do (an SSD hard drive is just a storage device and is called solid state as there aren’t moving bits which can break). The size will depend on what you are planning to do when mining. Ethereum Mining is a computationally in-depth work that requires a lot of time and processing power. A miner gets rewarded for providing solutions to challenging math problems via blockchain technology, just like bitcoin mining. Ethereum is the first ‘world computer’. It is a decentralized network that can be used by anyone and is capable of running applications with no possibility of downtime, censorship or fraud.
The most important part of a mining rig is the video cards. Currently the most effective cards are the GeForce 1070 and AMD RX 470/480/570/580. One of the newest and most powerful GPUs for mining is the AMD Vega 64 8GB which can reach 46MH/s.
We are going to build a rig using eight graphics cards, either NVIDIA or AMD. Eight is the perfect number in this case, as Windows works well with 8 GPUs, and motherboard with slots for 8 GPUs don’t cost that much. You can always buy a motherboard with slots for up to thirteen cards, but its price is higher than the eight slot version, and you’d have to install Linux to use it. That’s why we recommend 8 GPUs.
With all of that said, the 8GB versions of the cards tend to have faster-clocked memory than most of the 4GB cards, so if the price difference isn’t too large, spring for whatever is the fastest. Most of cards fall between 1650 Mhz (6600 Mbps effective) to 2000 Mhz (8000 Mbps effective). The slower 1650 Mhz memory GPUs will hash at 21-23 Mh/s, and the fastest 2000 Mhz ones will do 25-28 Mh/s (both can potentially be pushed higher with BIOS mods and good luck).
Ethereum intends to switch to a Proof of Stake scheme called Casper. Although this switch has been delayed, it’s reasonable to expect that it will occur in late 2018. Ethereum mining will no longer be possible after that, unless a hybrid Proof of Work/Proof of Stake model is implemented.
Ethereum is newer altcoin, and there are only a few providers on the market so far. Ethereum market is more transparent compared to Bitcoin’s market. However, we have to be awake as scamming companies will appear sooner or later.
The value of Ether currently stands at around $950 and it is a more or less profitable venture for beginners as well as experienced miners. Ethereum also runs on a proof-of-protocol like Bitcoin and the following need to be taken into account when calculating the profitability of mining Ether.
