1. You published this article on January 19,2017 and you talk about RX 480, but you recommend a driver that is not for this type of video card. I know that Claymore recommends it, but I think it was long time ago, when he wrote his program.
Claymore software has a fixed fee of 1% when you are mining ethereum or 2% fee when you are mining decred. There are various problems that can happen due to the way the Fee is working. The fee works in a way that each hour you will be disconnected from your mining process and for about 1-2 minutes, you will mine for the Claymore developers. After that it will connect you again to your pool and start the mining again. By constant disconnecting and reconnecting each hour your GPU cools down and then heats up again, and by doing that you are risking the life of your GPU’s. I heard from many people that after some time one of the GPU’s would reset to the default clock settings because of the constant disconnecting/reconnecting or it would “hang” and crash the miner or cause it to recreate the DAG file, and you end up losing valuable time with that. Claymore is a really cool software and I think there could be a better way to support the developers, rather than risking our own miner stability. By using the official Claymore I lost about 3% of my shares compared to using the Claymore without the Developer Fee, everyone can try it for themselves and see the difference.

For example, the RX 580’s hashrate has fallen from 23 MH/s (140 epochs) down to 18.5 MH/s (162 epochs). While the RX range is still great for mining other GPU coins, it’s quickly becoming obsolete for Ethereum mining.

  1. If you see 0/0, the DAG probably isn’t loaded properly, or you were impatient with geth –rpc and it didn’t sync up, now you’re working on some old block, hashing away, because you didn’t sync properly.
    The mining demand has driven prices well above their normal retail price. That said, the card achieves a hashrate similar to the GTX 1079 Ti and 1080 models. And it’s a fraction of the price and lower power consumption, at least compared to the 1080. However, you must keep in mind that this older technology will have a lower resale value than these Nvidia models (once it’s no longer suitable for mining).
    Whichever card you decide on, be prepared to spend a lot of shopping time at the various retailers and resellers. Only then can you hope to find that coin at a “fair” price. Mining has really inflated GPU prices across the board, which is a good indicator that GPU mining is still profitable—if you play your cards right.
