To get started you will need to obtain a mining wallet to collect your digital currency, mining software, and of course your trusty PC equipped with a worthy “miner” or GPU, or better yet multiple GPUs. NiceHash is a simple software package that will get you up and running, but there are a myriad of mining app choices and wallet types out there to choose from, with lots of guides on the net to educate yourself. We’re going to be focusing on the hardware and mining performance side of things in this piece, however.
In the end, it all comes down to your personal preferences. If you have the appetite for the risk and the mining process intrigues you, give it a try. Just make sure you do your research and proceed with caution.
Nvidia GPU’s CANNOT be bios moded, which makes them a bit easier to setup. For them it’s best to only use MSI Afterburner to overclock and limit their power draw. The downside is that you can’t get the maximum out of them, cause we can’t replace the memory timings.
The Monero team is also developing Smart Mining. “Smart Mining detects your CPU usage, and if your CPU is idle and you aren’t on battery power, it will begin mining. A: If you’ve got a suitable GPU with at least 3GB RAM, it’s a quick and painless matter of making some tweaks in Windows, installing the mining app then entering a few settings from your chosen pool’s website. Further details are available in the Getting Started with Mining section.
At the beginning of the install process go to CUSTOM instead of Express and ONLY select “AMD Display Driver” and “AMD Settings”. During install SKIP  the installing of ReLive,  because we won’t need it.
Click on the ‘View’ menu to deselect other cryptocurrencies, until only ETH remains. MinerGate will notify you that it’s loading a DAG (Dagger Hashimoto) file. This is around 1GB in size and represents the proof of work algorithms necessary to mine Ethereum data blocks. The Titan Xp can be overclocked to 42 MH/s, but it will consume 300 W when pushed that hard. It achieves an excellent hash rate without too much expenditure of power. Meanwhile, its top-end AMD rival, the RX Vega 64, achieves a very similar performance for about half the price.
Like I see it, the current best GPUs can mine 46 MH/s (Radeon R9). And they’re still profitable. So what exactly is the problem with having a miner that has more hashing power, would the power consumption be too high? How high would the power consumption of something like this be, I mean bitcoin miners have incredibly high electricity cost as well, why is this so different?
10. If miner cannot generate DAG file, check environment variables (see Readme), check if your GPU has 3GB memory at least, and check if you have enough virtual memory (pagefile). If all this does not help, try to install more physical RAM.
The current CPU mining world is far less democratic of a process than the GPU world, in my opinion. For example, I have access to many spare computers but I don’t even bother CPU mining because friends I know spin up dozens and dozens of AWS instances. The current CPU world is dominated by fewer individuals than any real (or hype) GPU based coin. One coin had thousands mining and was literally dominated by 2-3 people getting 98% of all coins.
An Ethereum mining rig is a configuration of two or more Ethereum mining GPUs. In most cases a rig consists of four or more GPUs. Obviously they’re more expensive than one GPU, but they also have far superior hashing power.

Again, you’ll need to do some research. Some of the miners support only particular GPUs, CPUs, motherboards or operating systems. You’ll need to double-check that the miner you select supports your setup.
GPU’s get random hashrate drops, for example it shows 29.5MH/s, but sometimes it will randomly drop to 20 MH/s for no reason in the logs, and that happens very often. The way Claymore software tries to force your GPU’s to stay at those rates is terrible, and it will not work properly if a new Driver from AMD comes out.
Whichever route you take, you’ll want to install as many graphics cards as your motherboard will take. Graphics cards with GPUs made by AMD are particularly popular among Ethereum miners, which has led to < href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/3204149/components-graphics/amd-nvidia-coin-mining-graphics-cards-appear-as-gaming-gpu-shortage-intensifies.html" target="_blank">shortages in supply. If you are ordering online, you might have to wait a while.
As mentioned before, each ASIC is specifically designed for a particular hashing algorithm. When Litecoin was invented by Charlie Lee, he chose a different hashing algorithm, known as Scrypt. The miners of Litecoin don’t have to compete with Bitcoin miners over the same ASICs. For several years there was no ASIC mining for Litecoin. Eventually, mining became so lucrative that people were incentivized to develop an ASIC for the Scrypt hash algorithm as well. Later in this article, we’ll discuss memory hard algorithms and their impact on ASIC development.

Overclocking: Overclocking is the simpler of the two methods. Windows and ethOS support these easily through Wattman and ethos-overclocking respectively. The general rule of thumb is that increasing the mem clock by 10% increases your hashrate by 10%. You can also change the core clock. However, this has a smaller effect. Also, reducing core clock can be beneficial because it can reduce your power use and while your hashrate will be slightly lower, you could be positive overall as you’ll be using less power. The right core/mem balance will depend on your electricity cost and hashrate.
