Ethereum uses a different hashing algorithm to Bitcoin, which makes it incompatible with the special hashing hardware (ASICs) developed for Bitcoin mining. Ethereum’s algorithm is known as Ethash. The motherboard is the most important aspect to any mining rig. The reason for this is that it needs to be able to support all of your GPUs. If you only plan on having one or two, then it’s not so important. However, most people will aim to maximize and have 6 GPUs in a single rig. There are very few motherboards that will support the running of 6 GPUs. The big advantage with mining is that you can run the GPUs from x1 PCIe slots, so you don’t need to find a with 6 x16 PCIe slots.
I had the brilliant idea of combining 10 such 16gb cards, with not but a power supply, small ram chip for bios, and 16 gb of ram and a memory controller, all feeding into 1 FPGA “gateway” device that would send out the work, and the biggest problem I ran into there is a data transfer latency timing issue, where basically I would in theory be submitting all stale shares because, by the time I sent the signal, processed it, sent it back, then received it, then passed it on those 10+ nano seconds would cause me to end up with an effective hash rate of below 1.5 Mh/s. so for 10 cards at 16 gb at a likely cost of $750 per card, or $7500- I could end up with a whopping 240 mh/s @ 2500 watts, IE worse than a rig of Rx 480’s.

I do not think so, many advanced mining rigs has already done, using GPU and memory as in video cards. I googled “ethereum asics” and found devices like this one https://www.nvminer.com , they call it an asic, but it still use NVidia GPUs. however, the hashrate and power consumption are more profitable, than graphic cards.
– Memory may or may not affect overclock. This is up for debate. I personally downclock my memory (reported to be downclocked and confirmed by all software from msi afterburner to gpuz to sgminer to ethminer) and on both extremes, low and high, I notice no difference in hash power over a 24 hour period.
While it sounds more complex, the idea is fairly simple. Every time a bitcoin transaction is made, the network ‘breaks’ the total amount as if it was paper money, issuing back bitcoins in a way that makes the data behave similarly to physical coins or change.
With the current saturation of miners and the stated plans to switch the network to a proof-of-stake system, I would avoid mining Ethereum at this time. There are several other coins available for mining, like Monero, that may be a better choice for you depending on your goals.
