I had the brilliant idea of combining 10 such 16gb cards, with not but a power supply, small ram chip for bios, and 16 gb of ram and a memory controller, all feeding into 1 FPGA “gateway” device that would send out the work, and the biggest problem I ran into there is a data transfer latency timing issue, where basically I would in theory be submitting all stale shares because, by the time I sent the signal, processed it, sent it back, then received it, then passed it on those 10+ nano seconds would cause me to end up with an effective hash rate of below 1.5 Mh/s. so for 10 cards at 16 gb at a likely cost of $750 per card, or $7500- I could end up with a whopping 240 mh/s @ 2500 watts, IE worse than a rig of Rx 480’s.

  1. What I recommend is running a command prompt (I assume you’re in Windows) and then navigating to the Ethereum folder and running the bat file. Doing it this way, the output will not disappear and you’ll be able to get the error message which will help in diagnosis.
    The GTX 1080’s performance is a tad confusing, everyone points to the GDDR5X memory as the issue, no one seems to know why. As a guess I would say there is some kind of latency issue that impacts mining performance.
    Ethereum plans to switch to Proof of Stake in 2018 which will eliminate mining slowly over time. But even if Ethereum is no longer mined you can find a new coin to mine, we recommend checking out whattomine which will keep you in the know for highest ROI coins to mine.
    Looking at the RX 470, we can do some quick math ($175 / (211 GB/s) ) to see that it costs $0.82 per GB/s.  Compared to a single GDDR5 chip (e.g. Micron EDW4032BABG), which costs $6.83 and has a bandwidth of 24 GB/s, we can do better at $0.28 per GB/s.  So, if we can build custom chip (either ASIC or FPGA) than can interface with 9 GDDR5 chips, we’ll have a memory bandwidth of 216 GB/s at a price of $61.47.  This still isn’t a finished mining product, since we need a FPGA or ASIC memory controller, circuit board, & support electronics.  If the shipped final assembly (adding additional parts, processes, testing, & logistics) costs less than the RX 470 (only $175), then the custom board will beat the GPU based card.  That is, until a faster, more efficient, cheaper graphics card comes to market.  For instance HBM graphics cards cards are already available.  But, if you find low cost, off-the-shelf, FPGA or ASIC chips with 5-10 DDR or HBM memory controllers, or your company is experienced in building custom high memory bandwidth ASIC solutions, you may be able to beat out off-the-shelf hardware.  But, if in this situation, you should probably change your business model and build graphics cards instead, since that’s already a huge market.
    The SSD is on it’s on SATA power connections. There are two additional SATA power cables plugged into the PSU, with 2x GPU’s on each SATA power cable connected to the 6pin to SATA cable from the powered risers. The powered risers are connected from USB on the riser to either a 1x or 16x PCIe slot on the motherboard. Each GPU has a dedicated power line going to the PSU.
