What kind of GPUs would you use? Do you have any examples? I’ve heard of external GPUs for workstation docks. In theory, it should work, since cryptomining generally runs off the GPU and doesn’t use the CPU very much.

There is an ever greater threat to mining profitability approaching in the near future: Ethereum is soon moving to a proof-of-stake model with the Casper Protocol. When this happens, something expected in 2-3 years, traditional mining will no longer work and mining rigs will become obsolete. Instead, only by locking in stake will “stakers” (as opposed to miners), be able to profit from the Ethereum Blockchain. Ram isn’t very important for your mining rig so we recommend only getting 4gb or 8gb worth of memory. If you’re running Windows you might want to opt for a minimum of 8gb while linux will run on 4gb of ram.
You are more than welcome to do your own research, buy the components on your own and build the thing from zero. However, if you are short on time and want to get your own plug and play mining rig at a reasonable price, then I am here to help.

Actually, I did talk quite a bit about the rising hash difficulty. Did you not read the last page? Did you not see on the front page where I talked about the ballooning DAG files making it harder to use older mainstream GPUs ( since most of them are 2GB VRAM or less )?

Now you’re talking about difficulty increase of 100%, which with this rate is easily going to happen before summer, might even be by march. Hopefully price will increase as well, but at some point we’ll be seeing a saturated market (especially once ETH goes PoS), so your prediction here is that 12-18months payback period. While i’d not speculate more than 6-8 months in the future. Because we can’t possibly know what will happen once PoS happens.
Thanx for the update. It’s still accurate right? And what do you suggest, should I wait for bitcoin to come back as a mining option and upgrade what I have or should I buy Ether/Monero from genesis(which is more profitable)?

If you plan on using more than 3 GPUs you’ll need PCIe Risers. These will allow you to connect the graphics cards to the motherboard without attaching them directly to the motherboard. Think of these as PCI extension cords to the motherboard.

That miner is the one which solves first the hash problem and finds the winning solution. Then it closes the block and signs all transactions, getting the block reward along with all transaction fees.
GPU stands for Graphic Processing Unit. Most high end machines come with high-end GPUs these days. Basically this is a dedicated processor in your computer which handles graphics processing, thereby taking the load off your CPU which will perform actual computational tasks while the GPU takes care of the graphics.
For example, if this were Jan 2016 and we were mining ETH, and spent $3000 for a rig and supplies that produced us (for academic purposes) 30 ETH through the end of the year. That $8.22 price on 12/31 means our mining got us $246. Not profitable; go back and look at the historical posts saying as much when people asked if mining was “worth it” and everyone said to not even try it. Those same 30 ETH are worth $7560 today (assumes not selling at the peak, not mining beyond 30 ETH). All of a sudden, it was retroactively “worth it” to mine, and those naysayers were wrong. All that happened was hodling.
Miners expend electricity hashing that block with the processing power of their GPU(s). A successful hash result produces produce a unique Proof of Work (PoW) proving that the miner worked on that block.

Power consumption is another major factor. Some GPUs consume as much as 500 Watts of power while there are others which consume as less as 150 Watts. This can be further broken down to power consumption cost per day which stands in at about $1.44 at the highest and $0.43 at the lowest.
