Therefore Ethereum mining is a good investment for people to get involved in as it reduces the risks from trading in a volatile market, and is a great way of generating passive income every month. In future articles we will also address the need for overclocking and undervolting your cards to increase efficiency.
However, I have permanently parked my miners on http://ethpool.org since they seem to really have their act together. You can see your account climb the credits list, they have per-worker stats, they reliably payout, and they are also the authors of etherchain.org.
Depending on the broker, currency pair and time of day this can be as low as one or two pips, although it can go significantly higher.  Of course the impact of this pricing will depend on the size of the trades you take.
I’ve tried creating a batch script with every iteration of the final line, it does nothing. The CMD prompt appears and then closes within a second. I’ve been at this for HOURS. Any help would be awesome….
Use these values to specify the number of GPUs you want to deploy for mining and the maximum price per hour you’re willing to pay for each one. For context, one GPU would produce Ether at a pretty slow rate. Also, in general, $0.20/GPU/hr is a fairly low price, but not so low that it will be hard to find instances.
The download of the Blockchain should start now. At the end of each line (in front of the square brackets) you can find the recently loaded # block number. If this # block number corresponds to the block number on www.etherchain.org, your Blockchain is up to date.
Difficulty is likely to continue its established rising trend (and could spike on the release of more efficient GPUs) and price is extremely unpredictable (and may crash if the market dislikes Ethereum’s solution to its on-going DAO crisis). Further, Ethereum is scheduled to switch to a Proof of Stake model at some unspecified date, meaning it will no longer be mineable.
While it does take a fee from your mining, it’s GUI quick and simple to use and once install you can be mining instantaneously. It also has some challenges that encourage you to mine, and if you’re an absolute beginner, then the simplicity of this software will have you jumping for joy. If simplicity is something you prefer, then NiceHash is also a very solid option.
For purposes of this guide, we are going to do a detailed walk-through of setting up and using the very popular Claymore Miner.  Get the current version here from Claymore’s original Bitcointalk thread and then follow along with the steps in this video.  The whole process of getting a wallet setup, downloading your miner, configuring things in Windows and setting up your batch file to run should take less than 10 minutes:
Admittedly I haven’t been trading forex – or anything else, for that matter – for a long time, but I did buy a $450,000 house to rent out, using – effectively – some leverage from the bank (I got a home equity loan of $330,000 and put in the rest, $120,000, from my own pocket; I only pay the interest on the loan, about $1,000 a month or $12,000 a year), and have been comfortable doing that for the last three and a half years. I earn a net profit, after all expenses, of around $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year, from the house in rents (I rent it out to students exclusively, and my son manages the house, for which trouble I let him stay for free in one of its two basement apartments). I judge this venture to be no less risky than a well-controlled forex account in which I never risk more than 1% of my capital per trade. The house could go down in value, it could burn down, a student could hurt himself and sue me, all sorts of nasty things could happen.
It is possible to mine Ethereum, using online services such as AWS, or DigitalOcean. However, no-one has managed to make this real-time profitable, and you should only take this root if you don’t wish to build your own rig and want to speculate on the pricing.
If you’d like to Solo mine, you will need to be in sync with the blockchain. To do this, you will need to download Geth and save it to a folder such as C:Ether. Then open a command prompt, and navigate to this folder using the cd command. First, if you’re not using a local wallet, you will need to sync the blockchain. The quickest way is using the command:
Most people think that Linux is a more stable operating system or because it’s so lightweight, that it runs better, it can have more GPU support (Windows 10 supports 12 GPU now) and should be a better option for 24/7 mining. It would seem logical, but it isn’t:
And with all this heat comes the need for cooling solutions. The computers are going to need fans inside them and on most components plus the room itself will need sufficient cooling so the ambient temperature is not too high and so that system components do not overheat and/or break. All this additional cooling is going to consume a lot more electricity and also create a whole lot of noise.
This shift is compounded by algorithmic trading (also called program trading). It means computer experts, or “quant jocks,” set up programs that automatically conduct trades when certain parameters are met. These parameters can be central bank interest rate changes, an increase or decrease in a country’s gross domestic product or a change in the value of the dollar itself. Once one of these parameters is met, the trade is automatically executed.
Personally, I’ve found Claymore to be the strongest and best all round miner. It’s easy to set up, I’ve never had any issues with it, and it has a ton of added functionality (e.g. fan management), that I haven’t seen with other miners. It also has the bonus that it can mine two coins at once, which some people have found very useful to optimize their income. There have been reports of anywhere between 3 and 10 percent extra income.
This mining calculator will display your expected earnings in both Ether and Dollars. The calculations are based on the assumption that all conditions (difficulty and prices) remain as they are below.
The card should have at least 3 gigs of RAM or it won’t be able to properly mine Ethereum. This is due to the growing DAG file (directed acyclic graph) used in the Ethereum Proof of Work hashing process.
Secure your wallet. Since there is no “ownership” when it comes to wallets, anyone who gains access to your wallet can use your coins as they please. To prevent this, enable two-factor authentication and store the wallet on a computer that doesn’t have access to the internet, perhaps storing the wallet on your memory stick or SD card if you need to eject/dismount it later and have the wallet on the go.
The new book will be out Dec 1. I had to push back the release date a couple weeks so everything in there is explained step by step. It takes the trader through the learning process and builds a skill base by introducing elements one at a time.
Also, you may want to be aware of heat and electric currents if you’re running custom or overclocked setups – melted plastic or overheated rooms aren’t fun, although most chips now have a thermal cut-off at higher temperatures.
AWS does it’s customers a big favor by implementing limits to the number of instances that can be deployed per Region and by Instance Type. This is to prevent new users from accidentally provisioning a huge number of expensive Instances and digging themselves into an accidental financial hole.
Going back to the analogy of real-world mining, in cryptocurrency mining you can use different tools to find the gold, so-called mining software. Each mining software has evolved over the years, but some have developed more than others. The primary contenders for Ethereum mining are Claymore and Genoil.
